individual smoothing groups?" i don't think he is refering to
"auto-smoothing" but actually "selecting" a numbered smoothing group
and a-la-auto-smoothing, apply a numeric value to it?
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. You can certainly select a group
of individual faces to put in any smoothing group(s), and you can
detach a set of faces into an object to auto-smooth based on any
specific angle value.

that's pretty much what i thought. now i'm not quite certain what the reader
