#BOOT PICS ??

I recently bought an A1200 with a 250MB HD & 6MB RAM – Yes its great compared
to my old 1meg A500 but evertime I switch on, something new puzzles me – I do
not want to bugger about with it too much unless I know what I'm doing but I'm
sure that there is TONS of uncecessary things going on. I don't like not
knowing what/how my machine is behaving.
Simple questions first – The machine Boots with an iff file called
commodore-windows.iff – I can't find that file any where (not even with Dopus
searching for me) – Any clues ? ? ? ?
What does KingCON do – Do I want it ?
How can I ask my computer what is currently running/ in memory ?
BEWARE – Answer my questions to helpfully and there will be more before you
know it (Getting to know my new baby is gonna take ages!!)

Look in your SYS:Prefs/Presets directory.

If only life was that simple – I've looked in all the directories and I still
can't find it anywhere – Does the Amiga have a file attribur#te structure like
PCs where a file can be flagged as 'hidden' ? – If so how do I find hidden
files ? – If it makes any difference, the Startup-Sequence file simply calls a
file C:BOOTPIC (which I can find but I can't find anything to 'edit' which file
it shows. Has anyone got this file and knows how to enter any options available
????

Pure

Read
Write
Execute
Delete
As you can see, much more sophisticated than clones.
And that hidden file is in your C directory
After cd c: try to issue list lformat %a

While the H flag is valid it is not implemented. If you
"protect filename h" , filename will still be visible.

Easy … look for an IFF file. Use something like ViewTek and at a shell and
type "vt #?". When you find the pic switch back to the shell and look at the
name — then delete the file.
But that will not make visible c:bootpic!

It will show any picture in any graphic format that ViewTek knows about.
Steve, are we talking about the same thing? I'm not sure.

Andy, I can help you with KingCON. It's a replacement for the console
driver and shell, and is great. I use it myself. It has nice things like
scrollbars to access lines that have scrolled out of sight, and file name
completion by pressing the TAB key after entering part of a filename. It
is very stable, too. Never had a problem with it.

Go into sys:prefs/WBPattern and take a look at what you've got set up
there. That's where your computer is told to display a picture (or
pattern) for a backdrop.
KingCon is a replacement for the shell and gives you a shell with scroll
back history, a scroll bar, and other goodies.

The Workbench Prefs are not a problem – Yes I've dicovered where to sort out
all the workbench pictures, patterns, fonts, etc, – Its just the first two
seconds of boot that are confusing me – Maybe I'll just delete 'BOOTPIC' and
try another file from the CS library to display pics while the machine boots –
I still want to find the .IFF file its using though because although I don't
like it (It reminds me too much of PCs (yukky!) I know others who might – Still
with the amount of other stuff to sort out I suppose this is fairly low
priority really.

If you run the SYS:prefs/wbpattern program, then click on "Select Picture" it
will tell you exactly where that iff picture is located and it's name.
Steve – Sorry I must have worded my question wrongly.
FORGET WORKBENCH!! – I know how to select WB backdrops and WBpatterns and
different colors and different icons and,and,and……. The problem is before
WB loads up – It is during the first few seconds of boot only (without it you
just get a blank screen). There is a file accessed by the Startup Sequence
called BOOTPIC, when you run this file it displays a picture (in my case a fake
PC Windows type screen) – Thats all it does. The problem is I dont know how to
edit the 'prefs' or whatever for that file because I cannot find anything.
The problem is not that important I'll just take 'BOOTPIC' out of the StartUp
and delete the thing – I just thought chances are someone out in the wierd and
wonderful world of CompuServe may be using the same file in their Start Up ! –

If I understand you correctly, you want to change the pic that bootpic
displays. If that's the case…
There's a newer version of BootPic (by the same author but different
program name I think) that allows you to select any pic you want that fits it's
requirements (hi-res lace and such). I'm not 100% sure but I think I have it
on my AmiNet CD-Rom. I'll check and get back to you.

I use a program called Bootlogo that I can use any IFF graphic I want.
Richard -> AutoPilot on the A1000, the only Amiga without the C= logo.
