HELP
I am using A Talk III on an Amiga and cannot get ANY of the download protocols
to work on compuserve although they work everywhere else!
What am I doing wrong?

Warren,
Make sure that you have ATalk's serial setup configured to 8N1 (8 data
bits, no parity, 1 stop bit). If there's an option to "strip high bit",
set that.
Many folks think that they have to use 7-bits with parity to access
Compuserve, but that is not the case. Using a 7-bit setup will cause
problems with downloading.

Bob, are you sure you want to strip the high bit? I use Auto pilot so
don't really know the actual settings for downloading, but but I thought
stripping high bits off was for compatibility with old stuff like old Unix
versions.

Yes, I'm sure about stripping the high bit – that is only in effect
when the data is being displayed. It does not affect downloads, which are
done with the full 8 data bits.
Autopilot, which was written specifically for Compuserve, knows exactly
when it has to internally strip the high bit for display and handles it
automatically. Other, more general-purpose programs, do not have this
intelligence built in, so we have to help them a bit.

Yes…CompuServe text is ASCII text…which is 7 bit.

Don, I figured the interactive stuff was 7 bits, but wasn't sure if it
would affect the downloads. I am now well informed on the subject thanks
to you and Bob :).

If the Latin-1 option is set then CompuServe text is 8 bit.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go. I was one of those who thought that 7 data
bits was essential!
