Dale: >>"I don't think the ZIPs are even being manufactured anymore…" Oh, great. That means if I want more memory in my A3000, I had better get the chips while they're still out there, along with the Buster chip…. Well it looks like I'll be shelling out another $200 to get up to 8 Meg fast mem. Can an Emplant work comfortably with that amount of memory (10 Meg total)? — Dave

A Mac wants more memory than an Amiga… There is always DKB's 3128. You can add Zorro-III memory in up to 4 SIMMs of 1(?), 4, 8 and 16 and 32 MB. While that'd mean a $200 (or whatever board), you'd then have more standard memory. Depending on how quickly you might move that RAM somewhere else or what you'd like your maximum RAM capacity to be, that might be important to you. In another five years you'll probably not want those SIMMs as badly, at least not for moving them to a new machine. They might still be used, but they might not. New (to the PC world) interleaved memory architechtures to make slower RAM chips be used with fewer waitstates (since the capacity of RAM doubles while the speed only increases 10%) might end up using a different standard RAM module. Dale: Hmmm… I probably won't be getting another computer unless the trusty 3000 dies for some reason, and can't be fixed <g>, so moving the memory to another computer isn't really important for me. I will look into the pricing for the dkb board. As far as capacity goes, the 16MB capacity on the A3000 is more than enough, I'm sure, albeit expensive to fill. BTW, the UPS man just came to the door, and delivered the OS 3.1 upgrade. Looking at the intallation sheet, it appears I have to go through the same rigamorole of taking apart the daughterboard and equipment platform and power supply as I would installing RAM chips, so perhaps both will be done at the same time….. and I'll wait on the SyQuest/HD option. Can't I just upgrade my computer for free? <g> — Dave

Dave, a recommendation. Do one at a time and verify that whatever you did works! Multiple changes have an annoying habit of returning to haunt the technician. The Four Seasons of Southern California: Fire, Flood, Earthquake, and Riot.

>Multiple changes have an annoying habit of returning to haunt the technician. I..I, just don't know what happened. Everything was just going fine and then, "Poof!" Somehow, the Agnus chip started to transform into this creature! It grew tentacles and grabbed me in its death grip! I screamed "Arrrrgggh!" And then all went black… ;-}

Brian, Regaining conciousness, I felt my body had changed somewhat. I tried to move, but my limbs wouldn't respond! Damn, I should have listened to Bartlett. He was right about Agnus. He said, "If it aint' broke, don't go in reseating every DIP in the system! Just making it tough for yourself!" Regards, John Chang

John, is this supposed to have some special meaning? If so, I miss it. Then again, I had history turned off. One of the prime recommendations I make to anyone that has a problem with their Amiga is to reseat the chips. Perhaps I missed a step somewhere in the message to which you are responding. If so, I haven't any idea what it was, as I stated above, my history function was turned off at the time. If I have committed some serious error, please enlighten me as to what it was. True, I do have the philosophy of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and indeed, it was the motto of my electronics shop (the best in the Western Pacific Fleet according to CINCPACFLT). We were farmed out to fix the problems on other ships if we were in port. Again, where was my error? Please! The Four Seasons of Southern California: Fire, Flood, Earthquake, and Riot.

Brian, Don't worry about it. I was just having a little too much fun. ;-} I thought I could start a fictional horror story and someone else would add to it.. and so on. Regards, John Chang

DJ, Garcia also mentioned that I should never have mucked around with the chips. I remember one morning when we were discussing the fate of the corpse, he said, "Stop torturing yourself. Its not your fault! You had no idea it was going to work that way. You're hand just.. slipped." I cried, "I know that DJ! But you should have seen the lights! They were on and then they just flickered out!" Regards, John Chang

Ahhh, there are so many what-if-I-hadn'ts in life! Most of mine have to do with my car and other cars or cops … I also remember one with a remote control transmitter, a screwdriver and two 67.5 volt batteries in series. OK, I'll admit there were tubes in the transmitter, but I was VERY young at the time, really. DJ On AP from Queens, the rotten core of the Big Apple

DJ, Really? Do tell us more. Anything to do with the FCC? Regards, John Chang

Naah, I stayed clear of those guys. I tried to stay clear of the IRS too, but slopiness in my first couple of returns (I used to live in Puerto Rico) got me into trouble – nothing a few thou couldn't fix though. DJ On AP from Queens, the rotten core of the Big Apple

ZIP chips are used in a number of video and co-processor boards, I would be amazed if they were not still being produced. Regards, Norm

The question isn't whether ZIP is an entirely unused format — it is whether system memory is still using ZIP. If not, you are unlikely to be able to get end-user quantities at a reasonable price (which you can't). Dale L. Norm: That's good news. I have other things going on besides the computer at the moment, so I think I will wait to add the RAM, as it is not needed right now (I have NEVER gotten a "Not Enough Memory" requester on the A3000), but I will need more when/if I get an Emplant board. Thanks. — Dave

Dave, not only are they getting scarce and expensive, they're a pain in the butt to install – those skinny little legs have a tendency to bend for me in the wrong direction – those sockets are not exactly zero-force types. If you're seriously considering upgrading, you may want to get a memory board with SIMMS instead, or even better an accelerator with on-board memory and SCSI-2 <g>. DJ: I'll be waiting on upgrading the memory for now. I will keep an accellerator and/or a board in mind when I do, though! Thanks. — Dave
