#Texture Universe CD?

In the march issue of Desktop Video World the 3D Studio ad mentioned
a Texture Universe CD. Can you expand on what this entails?
Sorry Vern, but I'm not sure if Autodesk has officially announced that
product yet, so I don't want to discuss it until I've got
authorization from Bob Bennett. Perhaps Jonas or Brian can
comment…

Video World on the 3D Studio advertisement page it would seem pretty

Dear Chuck, I typed the amount of free disk space wrong. It should be
114 MB. I made a drawing of a subway car today and I FORGOT to type
STATUS. If I have the money, I would buy two Zeos Pantera P66
computers, each with 32 MB RAM and two 2 GB SCSI hard drives.

Well, even with the revised numbers, you overall status screen looks
good. And always with 3DS and ACAD, buy AS MUCH horsepower as you
can afford, and then make sure you keep thing optimized to take full
advantage of it (no swap, purge your drawings, etc.)

PS Let me add one comment Jeffrey, I have been on this forum and
watched your questions develop from simple how-to's to some very
direct hardware and software issues. I think you need to be
complimented on the development you have achieved in a short time!

Dear Chuck, I wish I have the money to buy two Zeos Pantera P66 computers, each
with 32 MB RAM, two 2 GB SCSI hard drives, one 2 GB SCSI tape drive, PCI SVGA
card with graphics accelerator that can display 16 million colors, and a NEC
21" monitor but Mommy didn't marry a rich man. I am not sure about upgrading my
Zeos 486DX-33 EISA computers to 486DX2-66 microprocessors, upgrading memory
from 16 MB RAM to 32 MB RAM, replacing 212 MB IDE hard drives with 512 MB IDE
hard drives, and replacing regular SVGA cards with SVGA cards with graphics
accelerators, or buy new computers. I am afraid to buy new SVGA cards because
they may not be compatible with my old SVGA monitors and I may have to buy new

Let me respond…..
1) Be patient, we didn't all start out with Pentiums, and I still have a
486/33 VLB computer at home. Make sure that you are fully exploiting you
hardware before you move up. I have gotten to the point where my computer runs
24 hours a day, so it's fully utilized and time to move up! <BG>

I think that Evan Yares would after agree due to his recent positive review)
for a large format monitor would be IDEK! We have been using IDEK's for four
years now, and (knock on wood) we have _never_ pulled a service call on them!!!
Serious track record! I have a Vision Master 8421 at the office hooked up to a
Matrox MGA Impression, and 1600 x 1200 on this combo is KILLER!

drive bays, as it would be easier to simply add a second drive and "dedicate"
it as data storage. Should be a simple install, and drives have plummeted in
price. Call your dealer.

the monitor first, and BUY A GOOD ONE! I have an IDEK 21" 5221A at home that
has been on five different graphics cards. Graphics Card technology tends to
change much faster than monitors, and a good monitor should be with you for a
long time! When you purchase a monitor, use the following guidelines…
– 17" Get 1280 x 1024 support at 70Hz vertical refresh – 21" Get 1600 x 1200
support at 65Hz vertical refresh

We have two Ideks here and never have a problem too. One 21" (that works with
the Targa at any PAL res as well as display cards) and one of the new digital
based 17". I have tried them with everything and, except for a little problem
with the 1024×768 modes of the 21" with the TV1024, they have done an
outstanding job (one for more than two years, the other, about 5 months).

Dear Chuck, If my computers were cars, I would open the hoods and modify the
engines and transmissions so that the cars would accelerate faster and have a
top speed of 200 MPH. I don't know about IDEK monitors. I am jealous of you
because you have a Matrox MGA Impression video card and I have Diamond
Speedstar HiColor SVGA cards. My computers each have two 212 MB IDE hard
drives. Using the graphics mode of 1600 X 1200 would require 2 MB of video
memory if using 8-bit color or 6 MB if using 24-bit color. Can you read text on
that graphics mode? I think I couldn't read text on that graphics mode because
I can't see well. Jeffrey.

Guess what card I had hooked up to my 5221A Idek at home before I "plunged" for
the Viper? You got it, a Speedstar Hi-Color!

That is more a function of the driver than anything else. In AutoCAD I use a
20×30 pixel character box for 1600×1200. That would be _huge_ at any other
resolution, but _very_ nice for hires! As far as 3DS goes, as soon as the
drivers are out for the Matrox cards you should be OK for their Hires
capabilities.
I am going to stick with my earlier comment, and say buy the monitor first!

PS There was a comment made here about switchboxes. If you don't need both
computers at the same time, it's a great cost savings!
Dear Chuck, I ordered "3D Studio Applied" book with CD-ROM disk from
CompuBooks on Compuserve Mall on Saturday and it came in today. I
looked through the book and played most animation files and viewed
some image files. On the CD-ROM disk are two animation files of a man
and a woman walking. They look realistic. I want to buy "Inside 3D
Studio" book but I don't know when it will be released. I thought
that 3D Studio can use same ADI drivers as AutoCAD. My computers
don't have VL-Bus or PCI slots but they have EISA slots. There are a
few EISA SVGA cards such as ATI Ultra Pro and Orchid ProDesigner IIs.
I don't have the money to buy new monitors and expensive SVGA cards.
I am thinking about buying Diamond SpeedStar Pro SVGA cards because
they cost $130 each and I want to use the 24-bit color graphics mode
for rendering drawings in 3D Studio. My old SVGA monitors support 800
X 600 graphics mode at 56 MHZ. Jeffrey.

You may not want to buy *2* monitors. I really beleive in
monitor switch boxes. You could have many cpus and
all tied together with a switch box and one monitor.

Dear Jonas, I don't think that using a switch box to connect two computers to
one monitor would work because if one computer is busy, I would use the other
computer until the busy computer is finished. I connected two computers to one
printer using a switch box and sometimes I forget to set the switch box before
printing out the work. Jeffrey.

Umm, Jonas, you see, if something has already appeared in an ad, and I've seen
it, but no one's said anything about it on CIS, then I DON'T think your
statement's true!<g>
I was going to leave the same question message about the Texture CD, based on
the same ad. Is Autodesk's new policy "not to discuss announced products until
after they've been in release for 3 or 4 versions"?<BG>
