#Bump Map Too Hi-Res?

I've run into a bit of a problem with a 3DSr3 bump map. I've created a material which contains a bump map which is a 5mb TIF file depicting a very hi-resolution greyscale relief map of the world. From that same TIF file, I've been able to create mesh objects for each land mass. I'm now trying to accurately align the bump map with the land mass mesh objects. (I've successfully done this before on a smaller scale with a single country or continent). I'm running into trouble this time, however, because I can't make the bump map match the scale of the meshes. No matter how large I scale the map, it still seems limited to what appears to be a highly zoomed-in subsection of the map, not anywhere near the whole thing. I'm guessing that I'll need to substitute a much lower resolution version of this map (one is available). My reason for preferring the hi-res version is for clarity when I render zoomed in close-ups of some of these landmasses. Am I missing some capability of 3DSr3 to help me avoid substituting a much lower resolution bump map file? (I'm planning to render at 640×480, but I suspect this map is more like 2,000×2,000 or more.) For whatever it's worth, I'm running a 486/66 with 32mb of RAM. Thanks for any input you can provide. Gratefully, Lee

There's no limitation on bump map size in the program, and it's tough from your description to figure out where you're going wrong. If you need more help, you'll probably have to package up the .prj file and send it to Jonas or Brian so they can work with you on it. – G

Not sure I completely understand your problem. You say, no matter how you scale the map it still seems limited to what appears to be a highly zoomed in area… How are you scaling the map, and how are you monitoring its appearance? Are you using the Mapping Parameters settings in the Materials Editor (S button), or the Mapping commands in the command column? I recommend you first create a material with the map as a Texture map and apply it to one side of a cube at full size to first make sure that you're getting the whole thing. Then apply it to your land masses and first use the Mapping commands to scale and position it as best you can, before fine tuning the scale and position with the Mapping Parameter settings. Once you've got the Texture map working, copy it into the Bump map slot and try it out. (Before going through all this, you might first simply look in the Mapping Parameters settins for your current Bump Map material and make sure the Scale hasn't been turned up. Also check to make sure that the Tile settings haven't been increased in the Mapping commands. – Jack
