Hi. I am having trouble getting my network rendering up with the network software that comes with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Has anybody out there done this successfully? I am basically trying to start the net services from the DOS prompt by typing 'net start full' which works fine, and I can see all the different networked drives from both machines, but 3d Studio generally croaks, or doesn't come up at all when the net is running. If I do 'net stop', 3d studio runs fine, but doesn't see the slave, of course. Help…. I'm melting… Max Elliott Sibling Interactive

We have been running WFW 3.11 with 3DS r3 for about a year now and make networkrenderig each day. We have one computer always running windows so the other computers can reach it from DOS, it works mush like a server in an ordinary LAN. This computer doesn't run 3DS, it only has a big harddisk for the TGA files and a 4mm DAT for backup. <<but 3d Studio generally croaks, or doesn't come up at all when the net is running.>> What do you mean by "croaks"? Doesn't 3DS start at all? If soo you could have somekind off trouble with the network-card doing something in high memmory or something like that. WFW would normally have no affect on the ability to start 3DS! If you could explain your problem more, I will try to help! -M.E

When I try to run slave mode from WFW I get the message -REALBREAK not supported with this version of DPMI. This has something to do with the DPMI memory manager and PharLap? I can only run slave mode from DOS, but when I do that, it is never visible on the network as an available slave…. I'm going to try fixing the problem with windows, as I heard a rumor that rendering is actually faster if you run 3ds as a dos shell from windows, something to do with virtual memory management being faster… Do you know anything more about that? Is it really just a rumor? In any case, it would be much more convenient to be able to shell out from windows as I use Photoshop etc. quite a bit. Thanks for the reply! Are you running a 2 or 3 computer WFW? You cannot, if you not order the extra WFW ADDON DOS, connect two computers running dos. As for what I know, 3DS runs aproximately 10% slower in a dos window if it doesn't have to use windows swapfile, then it gets realy slow! You have to put PHARLAP.386 in you SYSTEM catalog and add it in the SYSTEM.INI to make it work. I run 3DS under windows all the time under the construction phase, but never when rendering. -M.E

This will happen if you to run 3D Studio Release 3 while not under enhanced mode or if you haven't set up the "DEVICE=PHARLAP.386" under "386ENH" in the Windows SYSTEM.INI file. Or copied PHARLAP.386 to the windows system directory. -b

I am thinking of network rendering using 3DSr3 over a two-machine peer-to-peer network. Can you confirm that I can do this using the MS-DOS add-on for WfW3.11?

Ben: PMJI, if you are only trying to link two computers try the DOS INTRLNK command with a parallel cable. I've done this and it works fine for DOS, the part I haven't tried is running 3DS. I don't think it would be any problem at all and talk about cheap. If you already have the network cards and WFW then you can ignore this message. The WFW solution sounds feasible and a few forumites have made this work, good luck. Bob

That will not work. INTERLNK requires one of the machines to run INTERSVR. INTERSVR does not allow you to do anything else.

Chris: Oh well, it was a shot. Sorry if it missed the mark. Bob

<< MS-DOS add-on for WfW3.11?>> It will work. I personally feel that WFW adds a lot of unessesary overhead, but I've set it up and it works fine. -Brian P.S. This assumes running just the network drivers while in DOS. Don't try to do this in a DOS shell while under Windows. Major memory hassle.
