#new 3ds user info
4 messages in this thread
Greetings,
I have always loved CI$ for the ability to get help/direction and new
ideas. I just purchased 3DS on Friday and I am working up the learning curve.
Below are my applications, expertise and questions. Thanks for your help!
I am a research veterinary pathologist that hopes to use the images/data
or concepts from 2-d and 3-d research images (via NTSC->VGA->2-d and confocal
microscope->2-d/3-d images) to make animations. I use a CCD camera on a
microscope to collect 2-d images for image analysis and a confocal microscope
that uses laser light to make 2-d and/or 3-d real-time images over time using a
super-cooled CCD. All images can be stored as *.TGA/TIF files.
I am comfortable with 2-d graphics (e.g. Corel/Aldus/Adobe/ Arts &
Letters/Fractal Design/etc.) and Animator Pro, but need help with both (A)
info-sources and (B) add-on options for 3DS. I am also interested in (C) where
the best place is to find new users also working to "master" this dramatic
product . . . like news letter, user-groups.
From this forum I have learned about IPAS products, tho I am uncertain
how to find vendors, and lots of selected tips.
Thanks for you help and ideas,
john
John:
Welcome to both 3D Studio and the ASOFT forum! Sounds like you have a great
use for the program!
One of the best places to find friendly (reasonably, anyway <g>) help and
advice is right here. Another is to see if there is a local user's group near
you with regular meetings. Where are you located?
There are a number of books on 3D Studio out right now. I'm slightly partial
to "Inside 3D Studio" (co-author, available at most major bookstores), but you
could also look into "3D Studio Applied" and the "Tips and Tricks" series.
You can't go wrong with any of them, and most animators have all of them!

Hi Greg,
Do you have an ideas on where to find anatomical DXF or 3DS libraries?
Or other DXF libraries for that matter. I checked with the base (WPAFB)
multimedia center today and only came up with CGM files.
I have Manaquin (by HumanCad) that will do human exteriors/surfaces but
would love to find a product that does organs (the vital type, not the music
type 🙂 like hearts, lungs, vessels, etc. I have read about a DXF producing
product for bones here.
I will check out the books you mentioned, thanks. You are correct, the
price for advice here is much better than that I have been offered for a fee. I
expect the friendlyness and quality will be first class too!
Thanks, jhg
John:
If you want to purchase quality libraries of human parts, Viewpoint and Accuris
come to mind.
If you have access to the Internet, avalon.chinalake.navy.mil has lots of free
meshes.
There are also 3D BBS systems set up, The Render Plant (816) 525-5614 and
Hi-Lux at (510) 233-7859 are probably two of the biggest.
Have fun exploring! Greg Pyros
