#Setting 3ds up/138MB RAM
3 messages in this thread
Hi, folks!
Well, who was that person who said: "The more memory, the better."? Hmmm…? My
ALR P5-90 was doing fine with 64MB of ram but when I added another 64M to bring
it up to 138M (8M are on the motherboard) some trouble began.
First, I had to replace the PCI ATI-Mach64 with the Diamond Stealth-64 because
the ATI only allowed 16 colors! I've since heard that ATI has a fix for this
but it's moot now.
Second, I peddled down to Quarterdeck and picked up QEMM386 V. 7.04 thinking
the USERAM parameter would allow 3ds3 to see the extra memory. Not.
Chances are that I'm not setting it correctly? <bg> My line reads:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM RH:N USERAM=72M:64M
The guy at Quarterdeck support gave me the "RH:N" switch because he said a PCI
slot "likes it". Then he said to Optimize with the /RN switch.
Trying several combinations, I've gotten 3ds3 to recognize 80M, tops.
Ok, guys, what's the fix? I give up.
Cheers,
BB
I'm a hardware idiot, but I do remember a message that Jamie Clay posted a few
months ago. Here 'tis:
Certain Pentium-based machines need a little kick start when trying to get them
to recognize more than 64Mb of RAM. Here's the secret (courtesy of Jamie
Clay):
First, does all the memory count up during initial boot?, if so read
on…
o Get QEMM 7.04 (actually you can't yet purchase this, but you can
get the patch to QEMM 7.x on CIS in the QEMM forum)
o Then you use the(undocumented) SCANMEM command to display the amount
of memory the machine has. SCANMEM returns a memory range called
USERAM.
o That range then needs to be plugged into the QEMM386.SYS's USERAM
option in the CONFIG.SYS.
Example: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM USERAM=XXXXX-XXXXX
From there it works like a champ. Note – you needed to add the RAM
option to get Windows to work with it.
I was talking to auto desk and the metioned that 3ds3 can access 1 gig of ram
using QEMM.
