#PAR Conversion

Looking for a source to take my RENDERED .ANI files from the DPS PAR drive
(from tape backup) and provide me a final output animation on either 3/4" or
BETA tape. I have clients who use one or the other. What are your prices and
turnaround times?

We have a PAR and both BetaSP and 3/4". Which do you prefer? Also, what
formats do you have to get the files to us? (Aside from just bringing over the
hard drive, which is usually the fastest!)

Right now I have a 30 second ANI PAR file (about 78 Mb) which I can backup off
my PAR drive onto a TRAKKER 250 tape (DC-2120). I need it converted to 3/4. I
like JKJ's idea of renting a drive, but nary a sign of one in Montana here.
Also do you guys do studio work to add some audio. My client has been taking my
SVHS and letting the TV station add the music. I don't think this station has
very bright help. They cannot seem to do a very good job. What are you rates
for the above transfer and if we were to have you add the audio (off CD)?
Hey and by the way, you said a while back you might have copies of you latest
feature animation duped. Is it available yet?

Yes, we do all sorts of rendering and tape lay-off services, in addition to
lots of video editing, and audio sweetening (voice overs, special effects,
etc.)

Unless I missed something, do you mean JNJ and a video deck?

Yup….Sorry I meant JNJ (me fingers and brain are sometimes in different
channels). The issue was on getting some of my PAR stuff to either 3/4 or BETA.
In the middle of Montana I cannot rent drive time offsite. There are some who
will lend me time in their studio, but no way am I dragging my equipment to
their site.
I think Greg has the solution. I might be able to buy a used 3/4 drive for less
than $1K, but the industry is going BETA (tell the TV stations in MT), so I
don't know what kind of sense it makes for me to spend the bucks.

Just think of it this way- 10 animations output'ed at roughly $100 a pop
equals your own deck. If you have the TBC IV, that'll give you even more
things to do with your PAR. I've had "my" PAR here 2 weeks now, and use it for
all kinds of stuff. It's great.
BTW- I've heard of some Beta SP decks out for around $7k. (and they're the
cheap ones.) $1k sounds great if you can get by with it.
Another idea I had a while back was to put a PAR into a lunchbox computer. Get
a slow 486 or so, and use it as the PAR server. Network it with your other
computer(s), and dump your animation to the PAR. Then just take the portable
PAR to wherever you need it. Much easier than taking your whole system, but
it'd probably run you $1k or so for a basic setup. (watch the temperature
though) That may be a good idea if you can get free Beta SP drive access, and
if Beta would give you better results (in $, etc.) I haven't done it, but I
believe it can be done. Just get one with 2 full length slots available. (and
a good fan)

Good ideas. I have a lunchbox PC, but it is only a 286 Compaq. Unfortunately as
the PC got faster, they got smaller. Alas no room for the PAR card. I like your
portable thoughts though. The PAR quality has really spoiled me. I have had
mine since Feb. A very hot device. The one thing that it really needs is a
stronger editor. Cut and paste is helpful…but we need more. It would be even
cooler to add the audio features too.

Wasn't me, but JNJ. I told him his N might look like my K to late-night
3DS'ers.
I personally don't believe in renting, thus perhaps explaining the mountains of
stuff piled here that I've bought and used just once or twice.

I'd suggest checking out how much it is to rent a Beta deck. If they'd rent
for an hour or two, it would be faster than sending it off somewhere.
If that is not an option, we could do it for you via a Qic-80 tape or direct
PAR HD hookup. Either Beta SP or 3/4 SP. (Greg's beta would be better though.
We're only using composite right now, until we can get a proper cable.) Hi8 at
full s-video is another option. Price would depend of length of restore, tape
cost, and desired turnaround time.
