I noticed with interest your upcoming YUV.bxp. But I need some enlightenment:
The most convenient all-digital post-house near me has a DHD/video
recorder, but!, it's not an Abekas, it's an Accom (if I've got the right brand
name). It's still YUV, still CCIR-601: 720×486, and they use 4mmDAT for
backup, as do I. SO- will the YUV.bxp work for transfer to/from their system?
I know I probably need to write the DAT in TAR format, but that's another
issue…. although if you have any ideas (my DAT backup is running off a
Macintosh on the network; it keeps the PC's free for rendering!)

Yes, the Accom and Abekas use identical formats. YUV.BXP should work fine, you
just have to get it on a tape in a way that they can read it! The tar program
should work out great!
You can send them a test with the demo version we have uploaded onto ASOFT,
after it works, then get the full size version!

Excuse me for jumping in but, where can one find a PC program that makes TAR
backup to a 4mm DAT?

There is a DOS version of the tar program (called PCTAR). It's probably in the
unix forum or you could go IBMFF and look for TAR or PCTAR. If you can't find
it let me know and I will upload it here.

I believe IBMFF has been changed to PCFF. It would seem that IBM/Big Blue is
establishing a corporate presence on CompuServer and my guess is they've taken
exception to the use of the "IBM" part of IBMFF.

Unfortunately, all it seems I have time for these days is to watch what
everyone else is doing with 3DS – and I'm truly amazed. Because I'm not an
animator by trade [I run an MIS dept] I used to keep up by 'practicing' with
3DS at night. That was… until my little girl was born. She's a real joy,
but a very high-maintenance baby!
Keeping up is impossible – so I lurk on the sidelines and every once in awhile
stick my 2 cents in.

where can I get some more info on this YUV thingy? I've been out of touch for a

the idea of being able to use DAT, instead of Exabyte intrigues me. I've balked
at the cost of buying a Exabyte 8500/8505 – the DAT is about half the price.
'Course, I'd have to find a post house equipped with DAT backups, maybe on an
Accom DDR.

No, I didn't, but then I don't have any money to spend at the moment anyway.
Taking 7 weeks vacation (5 weeks Europe, 2 weeks recovery in USA) has decimated
the coffers for now. Better start working again before I even think about
buying more equipment <g>.
Also, I think it's pretty important to buy a tape backup that's covered by a
comprehensive warranty. I've already learnt the hard way by buying a used
1st-generation DAT drive with no warranty. The thing went up in smoke a few
months after. I'm leaning towards getting an external DAT drive, unless
_warranteed_ Exabytes 8500/8505's hit the $1000 mark in the next few months.
I am sure that there are several programs for tar write/read for PC. I
downloaded several programs from CIS. Try the UNIX forum. From commercial
software, I am sure that MKS Tools (POSIX commands for PC) package has the tar
for DAT tapes. BTW, maybe there can be the problem with SCSI controller. You
should have ASPI driver.

The Accom is basically an Abekas clone – it uses the Abekas and UNIX file
formats, so as long as the machine can read your file input (tar, ethernet or
whatever) the YUV conversion should work.
