Hi All, Does 3d studio support import of true type fonts and exporting them indfx format? Assuming yes, does it convert so the holes in eg 'e' and 'o' are still there if I convert them into another format. Thanks Andy,UK

Yes you can import .PFB fonts into the 2D Shaper. The only way to subsequently export them to a non-3DS file format is if you mesh them (by lofting them or Get Shape from the 3D Editor) and save the resulting mesh as a DXF file. And yes, the "holes" in your fonts are correctly preserved in the resulting meshes. – Phil

Unfortunately, no, although 3DS does support postscript fonts, there is no support for truetype. I do all of my text work in Corel, and export as .AI files into 3D Studio. m.

Once you've gotten your fonts in place, select FILE – EXPORT. Choose the Adobe Illustrator (.AI) option for file type and you're set. You'll be prompted for the AI version (I always choose v3.0) and whether you'd like to export text as text or shapes (always choose shapes). Done. Go into 3DS, and FILE – LOAD the AI file in the shaper. You may have to then weld your vertices. Important: In Corel, before exporting, make sure all of your objects and/or text have no fill and just "hairline" outlines. m. NRN

I found a program that converts truetype to DXF. type 'go graphdev' to get to the forum and then search for tt2obt (I forget the extension). You need to pay the programmer (Markus Rahlff) to get the program to convert vowels though. My only problem is that I havn't been able to import the converted DXF files into the 2D shaper, only the 3D editor. Anyways, it might be something to look into. —-Will

Andy, the DXF specification only supports Autodesk SHX font files and Adobe Type 1 PFB font files. Dietmar

Speaking of DXF specs, I recently bought the AutoCAD Lexikon upon your recommendation. However, I had the impression it was an English-to-German AutoCAD dictionary. Although I'm going to keep the book, I think you need to be more careful when describing it! The book has both German and English entries, allowing you to determine the definition of either term. However, *all the definitions are in German.* I had the mistaken impression that at least half the book was going to be in English. 🙂 In other words, that the front half of the book would've listed all the terms in one language, with definitions in German, then the other half would list the terms with definitions in English.

Sorry John, the 'Lexicon' explains the words in german language, but it _translates_ them in both directions. Dietmar
