That depends what your main application is going to be. The Picasso II is a
great all round graphic board, it's got great emulation features, it's real
fast in 256 color screens. The retina is very slow in 256 color screens (Retina
Z2 that is) but is super fast on 24 bit screens and can do higher resolutions
with an appropriate monitor than the Picasso II. If you want a 256 color
workbench, or want to use your other application software on 256 color screens,
plus have some decent 24bit capabilities, then the Picasso II would be the
better choice. Also the Picasso II doesn't use CHIP RAM for opening up custom
screens, so it's better if you have only 1 MEG of CHIP RAM (But 2 MEG of CHIP
RAM is so much nicer on any Amiga) IF you need strong 24-bit graphics support
for Ray Tracing, or other 24 bit work like TV Paint Pro Retina. (TV Paint Pro
is unbeleivable fast on a Retina 24bit screen) and don't need fast 256 color
Workbench or other apllication screen, then a Retina Z2 with 4 MEGS is better.
Unfortunately, folks like us with A2000's, there isn't as much to choose from
for our Zorro II machines.
If you know people with either a Retina Z2 or a Picasso II, you might want to
try out their machines first to get a better feel about the capabilities of
each card before you buy.

Do you *love* and recommend the Picasso, and are they available? I just got
3.1 for one of my 2000's and haven't decided the final destination yet. I saw a
post that 3.1 didn't work well with the Toaster. Any truth in that?

I do LOVE and recommend the Picasso! It's improved my computing life
immeasuably (sp?)! From dark flickery screens, I now have solid bright, light
screens. Changescreen (a utility for promoting programs) works like a dream
and there are very few programs (productivity) that can't be promoted (other
than Opalpaint, I can't think of any off the top of my head).
As for the Toaster and OS 3.1, I really don't know; I don't have a Toaster
(I've an OpalBoard instead, and OS 3.1 works fine with that). Perhaps Hank
Teller, or another Toaster expert can tell you about that one!

Hi Jim,
There have been mixed results with 3.1. I had a 2000 Toaster system with the
Toaster 4000 card that ran fine under 2.1, but the Toaster wouldn't boot with
3.1 so I yanked it. Newtek, I believe, recommends 3.1 for A3000 Toaster users,
and are clearly passive, or almost negative, about other Amiga platforms. As
was the case with the 3.1 I tried on the 2000, be sure you can return it if it
doesn't work. Our distributors leave that door open for us.
You may just want to wait until AT provides the next Amiga OS

Thanks for the info on 3.1 and the Toaster. I have 2 2000's and 1 500, so 3.1
will find a home in one. Probably will go for a Picasso II, a '60 when
available and leave the one with the Toaster alone.
Can you ParNet with different versions of the OS?

Hi Jim,
I believe the key here is the ParNet software. If is runs under each machines
OS, than that's a start. Also, mixing 1.3 and 2.0 would probably be risky, what
with the different file structures.
When you are looking for a Picasso II and the '060, give me a call. If you'd

As far as I know they are still available. Check out some of the mail order
houses if you don't have a local dealer.

I wish there was a picasso for the a1200 (without tower), I think there were
plans for a pcmcia version, but that could have been dropped 🙁
