#28.8 Problem Under 3.1

I wonder if someone here could give me some tips. I recently bought a ZyXEL
2864 28.8 modem. When I use it on my father-in-law's 2000 with 2.04 I get 28.8
performance out of it. When I try to use it at 28.8 on my 2000 with 3.1, I
can't get it to work higher than 14.4. I have my preferences serial set to
31,250.
When I try to set the serial parameter in Term to 31,250 the modem does not
respond. If I enter "AT" I only get the "A" on the screen. If I drop the
serial parameter in Term to 19,xxx, and enter "AT", I get a proper response,
etc., but then I can only communicate at 14.4.
This is a tad frustrating as I got the 28.8 to make my WWW browsing so much
easier. Now I find that I can use AMosaic 1.2 under OS 2.04 at 28.8 OR AMosaic
1.4 under OS 3.1 at 14.4., but not AMosaic 1.4 under OS 3.1 at 28.8. 🙁

try setting Term to 38400 bps. Most modems are not able to synchronize to 31250
bps on the serial line to the computer.

ONe other issue is are you using the same phone line? We get large
varirance between connect speeds using the same computer but different phone
lines.

Try setting your prefrernces to 38.4 and see if that helps.

28.8 modems on an A2000 are really pushing the serial device. As I recall, when
I first installed mine, I would sometimes connect at higher than 14.4, but it
so slowed down the rest of the system, that I bought a multiface card and now
use that for the modem. High speed connectes still slow down the system
somewhat, but not near as bad as before.

I agree with Michael,
if you run an unaccelarted A2000 with more than 19200, you might cause trouble.
Some programs work fine with a plain 68000 and 38k… but just some.
Solutions: the cheapest solution is to get an IO board. As these boards use
buffered IO, they require much less CPU time and thus offer even 115k with a
plain A2000. The usualy sell for US$75. Beside: these boards also offer a
faster parallel port for printing.

try a serial speed of 38400 not 31250 because that is I believe MIDI and not
supported by devices like modems
