#creating catalogs?
5 messages in this thread
Hi, Im new to the wonderful world of 3D Studio. I was looking
through my copy of Inside 3D studio and was surprised to find an
animation file (catalog.flc) that when played gave a thumbnail of all
materials that came with the books CD Rom disk. My question is
this… if I wanted to create a flic of each of the materials
directories on the World Creating Toolkit (woods, metals,
marbles…etc…) what would be the easiest way to do it. (And I do
mean easy!) Please spell out 'exactly' what needs to be done as I
have only had 2 days of instruction with the package and have been
floundering through the tutorials. Your help is greatfully if not
desperately appreciated 🙂
Hi Michael,
Welcome to the world of 3DS.

I would start with searching the library with the Keywords "World
Creating Toolkit". Download all of the thumbnail image files and use
them as bitmap entries in video post. Hold each image for maybe 30
frames and render a flic. Nice and easy.
Jonas,

If Michael is not going to tape and only creating a flic…
there is no need for 30 frames of each thubnail, is there?
Wouldn't a slow playback speed work?
The same procedure could be used for going to tape,
depending on which method was being used to output to tape.
Right?

Hi Kevin,
<< right ? >>
sure.
Hi Michael,
Welcome to 3ds !
What I do to catalogue my meshmaps (and you will collect a LOT of them in short
time) is as follows :
1. sort them in specific directories under your meshmap directory
(wood,stone,…)
2. Once in a while scan them with a program that creates thumbnail pages
(I do it with gifdesk 'cause I use mostly gif's and it has a script
language)
(Thumbs Plus for windows is nice too for all those mouse freaks out there)
3. Print a catalog or name your thumbnail pics #wood1.gif, #wood2.gif, so they
will always stand on top and place them in the matching directories.
This way I can always call VIEW IMAGE from 3ds and view a lot of my maps at
once.
BTW there are some IPAS routines that tried the thumbnail stuff inside 3ds, but
for my part, i can't use 2 lines of pics on the upper third of a screen and
buttons and descriptions waste the rest of the space…
Bye
Michael
