>>Regarding the 3-D accell hardware – I understood that they can not only assist in preview speed but also lend a hand in final render. Come to think of it, I think I remember something in a CGW a while back of a picture of a helicopter in which part of the scene (can't remember which part) was hardware rendered, w/at least the body of the heli. being done via the processor and Renderman. >>if all this works I will be a happy camper <|;-) :^). One thing that seems to have remained constant (even if the benchmark keeps changin'); Speed is Money; how fast can you afford to go? Or afford not to? John Stetzer JWS

<<how fast can you afford to go? Or afford not to>> EXACTLY! But John, it sure feels better *the kind of bang you get for your buck*, what with very sexy software and outrageous throughput speed. One of the reasons I keep hoping the ALPHA is viable is the ease of expanding the system. You can plunk down $12G and recover. Then, when and if you need more fire- power, more RAM more Chips and Dips 🙂 You know, it's funny, when I was a kid it was fuel injection, slicks, Hurst Shifters and Sun Tachs, and your reply says "how fast can you afford to go" <ahhhh, the irony> Jeffrey

>>your reply says "how fast can you afford to go" <ahhhh, the irony> :^); been there, done that, tho' it was w/a newer car (my "how fast…" project was an '96 police Mustang). Discovered a slightly hopped-up Suzuki GS 850 a few years latest and, at $800, found that to be some of the best how fast/bang for the buck I'd ever purchased :^). John Stetzer JWS And to think, all this for me started w/r2 on a_BLAZING_386-40 w/a_WHOPPING_16 megs of ram ;^).

<<and to think, all this for me started w/r2 on a_BLAZING_386-40 w/a_WHOPPING_16 megs of ram :^).>> <ROFL> John, I started on 1.0 on a 386/8mg RAM and it was a long wait before 2.0 was released. 320×200 render would take a long long time *BUT HOLY COW* I could see the future coming. It's been about 6 years and a lot of information cramm-funneled into the brain. Something odd though – my first model, first scene set-up, totally ignorant of so many crucial issues in designing an animation… but the —ummmmm— designing an animation inside a computer 3-D environment that is — anyway, the final render lock me in for life (got chills from me 'heels to me nose)! Besides, just think… if you lose control of a scene at least you don't have a head-on with a semi — you just crash and REBOOT <G> Jeffrey
