#Realistic CD

Hi, I'm trying to make a compact disc in 3DS, but I'm having some trouble with
the multicolored reflections CD's make. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do
this. I've thought about using a reflection map, but the tricky thing is that
the reflections have to move around the disc. I'd appreciate any help I can
get! Thanks!

Hi Robert…
How about rendering your reflection map to a TGA or gif or whatever then
using a spotlight projection? You can then animate it to your hearts content.
While I'm on the subject I recently projected a Flic onto a cube which was
rotating
around two axes (one linked to a dummy) with the spot light also linked to the
dummy
to maintain the alignemnt with the cube.
The problem I had was the spotlight occasionally "forgot" which way was up and
projected upside down (I have modeled text on the same side so I know it did
this) for
about a frame or two.
Anyone know if this is fixable given the difficulty of rotating things around
two or more axes?

What you want is the free IPAS routine called RAINBO_I. It was created by a
company in Hong Kong (Pointer?) specifically for this purpose. I found it on
the Internet on Avalon about a year ago, look in the libraries here, or holler
if you can't find it and I'll e-mail it to you.

Thanks a lot! Seem's to be just what I need. I'll download it from Avalon right
away!
Hey, Greg, I'll bet Anne would let you upload that IPAS to the libraries here
(there's always room for a free IPAS, isn't there Anne?) I, for one, would
love to have it.
But it's already out there! See rainbo.zip in lib 1.

We can always find room (mostly by bumping something old no one has looked at
for a while <G>) for a free IPAS routine. I see Larry Minton already pointed
you to the Rainbo.Zip you were looking for though.
Anne
Yep, thanks got it.
Ya know, you just need to get CIS to give you more space <g>!
Robert, I have just finished a sequence using a CDROM in it. What I did was
use an actual master cdrom, you the gold ones and scanned the cdrom. he
resulting tiff file was exquisite- a perfect texture map. I then mapped this
to a cdrom object using bitmap fit. The result was good. The cdrom is spinnig
from a distance and arriving center stage in the foreground and looks very
convinving. If you need reflections I would suggest adding a reflection map.
I also trried the rainbow ipas but did not get the look I was after. r since a
real cdrom has a bending diffraction pattern which is difficult to model. Hope
this helps. The key is scanning the cdrom with a good 24bit scanner. I used
an HP IICX. Good Luck. Steve Schram.
Thanks for the tip! I never got the rainbow ipas to work the way I wanted
either, but using an actual CD scan probably will.
