Hi Kyle, If you have the time, I could use some expertise with Meshpaint. I am trying to paint the mesh that I made with Metaballs, and with a lot of your help. The problem I am seeing is paint being applied to parts of the mesh I am not painting on. It is almost like the paint wants to go to all parts of the mesh that are on the same plane. Imagine a body and leg combination similar to a grasshoppers'. The back is bumpy, and the first joint in the back legs is higher than the back. If I apply paint in the recessed areas of the back, the paint will fill every portion of the back at that level. This is not so bad, but it also wraps around the legs, inside and out. So, if I view the mesh from the side, it has a ring around the upper leg. When I created the mesh, I used a lot of copy commands on the spheres. I was thinking that I was running into some kind of "instance" problem, but I don't think that's the case now. The head was not made with any kind of copy command, and has the same problem. If I try to draw a line right down the middle of the forehead, the paint covers the whole top of the head. If I size the brush down, it still covers, but looks like tree rings. Also the hands have major problems. Painting the outside of one hand, I see the same shading applied to the inside and outside of both hands. The shading is to highlight the tendons on the back of the hand. With the same paint apllied to all 4 surfaces, it makes the palms look like the back of the hand. I've went through the manual and am out of ideas. I feel sure that it must be _something_ I'm doing wrong, but can't think of what it is. Thanks, Terry

Terry, When you paint on an object in MeshPaint, you're painting in an area defined by the mapping coordintes you applied to the object. So, if the brush strokes you apply, are showing up in more than one place on your model it's because the same area of your mapping coordinates are projecting through more than one place on your mesh. You can try changing the type/scale/position of your mapping coordinates. -Kyle BTW, I am going on vacation tomorrow – I'll be back on-line around on Wed the 13th. I hope you get your mapping problems worked out.

Kyle, >>…the same area of your mapping coordinates are projecting through more than one place on your mesh. << Got it. I know exactly what you're saying and it makes perfect sense now. Right off hand, I can't think of anything to do about it except use selective camera shots. Maybe something with the scale thing might work. Anyway, have a great vacation and I'll let you know if I come up with any brainstorms on the mapping thing. Thanks a lot, again, Terry

Terry, I was told at Siggraph that the next version of Metareyes will have the ability to generate mapping coordinates for each sphere. You may want to contact Schreiber to see if it is available yet. Digimation's Organix program already has this capability, and will allow you to paint on any part of the object without side effects. It is my understanding that the next version of Metareyes will be automatically shipped to me when available. The same with Meshpaint, so maybe between the two, things will get simpler. It also looks like OrganiX with the sticky mapping routine is going to be a must have anyway. Thanks, Terry

Terry, Let me know what works best. We're working on a solution within MeshPaint as well. I'll keep you posted. Brent
