How much Ram for NT?
6 messages in this thread
How much RAM does NT require on its own? I heard from as little as 4mb to as
much as 20. I have 24 right now, and plan to go to 32 soon.
Hi jason,
Nt wil run on 12 megs barely, with no apps open.
Nt runs nicely on 24 megs as long as you are not doing graphics,
ie word, excel etc.
with graphics you need 24 megs for the OS and 24 for the apps,
so 48 is a practical min.

I would suggest 64 MB as a minimum if you want to do any serious production
work. 3DS renderings can eat up a lot of memory if you render in high
resolution and then need to post process in Photoshop or similar. I've had
rendered files as large as 50 Mb at times.
I cant't afford that much right now, so I'm going to get 32, and see how that
does. I know it will be slow. Thanks
Jason
P.S. Is it true that anything that runs under Win95, will work under NT? I plan
to buy it VERY soon. And would just like to know what i can and can't use.
Most Win 95 programs should work with NT as long as they do not access hardware
directly. Tape backups, scanners, digitizers, etc., all need special drivers
to operate with NT. However, there may be apps that require Win 95 components
that are not avaliable in NT.
If you are interested in 3DS however, you will have to go with NT, as MAX will
not run in Win 95. Anyway, I run both systems, and NT is more powerful and
also faster then Win 95. If you have a PCI system with a Pentium, NT will fly.
For example, AutoCAD 13 loads in eleven seconds in Win 95, but loads in THREE
seconds in NT.
Sounds Good. I plan onn getting it about a month. Looking forward to it &
MAX.
