It's happenned … now I need help!!
I have decided to go for the digital video setup. I am looking for expert
opinions and advice regarding my purchase…
PVR or PAR?
Which Pentium
Adaptec 3940?
Which drives and how many of them?
RAID?
NT or 95 or both?
I already have Premiere 4.0. Is it gonna work with the PVR or PAR?
Currently have VO5800 and an AG7750. Need TC Card for the AG7750
What do I need to connect the AG to the PAR and which software to control it?
Thanks!!!
Phil,
>> PVR or PAR? <<
PVR. Why get old technology if you are buying all new equipment?
>> Which Pentium <<
a dual 120 or dual 133 if you can find one.
>> Adaptec 3940? <<
What's that? I have a few 2940W's which work fine.
>> Which drives and how many of them? <<
get A/V drives for both the PVR and system disks. Seagate or Micropolis 4gb
models. Number needed depends on your project sizes. You could always start
with one of each and see. Prices going down make this stategy a reasonable one.
>> RAID? <<
probably not necessary unless you have some special application or network
needs. If you're doing film work it can be a good idea.
>> NT or 95 or both? <<
ROFL! NT and dos.
>> I already have Premiere 4.0. Is it gonna work with the PVR or PAR? <<
you'll need 4.0a to work with the PVR and they do work together according to
the docs. If you have high-powered needs you might consider Speed Razor Mach
III by in:sync which runs under NT. They have Razor Pro for regular Windows.

no special software or hardware required. Just a couple of s-video cables for
capture and output. There is GPI trigger capability which requires an RCA
cable, I think, but I don't use it.

Isn't there also 422 deck control on the PVR?
PS… How long have you been at metrolight? Congratulations if its recently. I
did some work with them while I was at Boss Film for 7 years… Good Luck!
Phil,
>> Isn't there also 422 deck control on the PVR? <<
hmm, possibly. It's not something I've paid attention to. Anybody else know????
>> PS… How long have you been at metrolight? Congratulations if its recently.

6 months now. Doesn't seem that long …. which is probably a good sign 🙂
>>6 months now. Doesn't seem that long …. which is probably a good sign 🙂
not if your busy.as I am sure Metrolight is… my seven years at Boss went by
like wildfire. I almost missed my kids growing up! Glad I left but I sort of
miss the hustle…
the 422 control will exist on PVR NT!
BTW I am going for a system with a 9GIG. And a Fast Wide SCSI on the Pentium. I
guess the Pentium will need at least a 4 gig also eh? I got the update on the
way for Premiere… But I have a question…
When you use something like Premiere to assemble a film from ANI files on the
PVR drives, the codec knows enough to put the resulting file on the PVR and
makes an AVI image on the Host PC, yes?
Phil,

I think you are mistaking me with somebody who knows something about the PVR
<G>. We've barely scratched the surface of it's potential and haven't done
anything with AVI's, so I don't feel very qualified to answer your question. I
would guess that the answer is yes and that the PVR's avi codec merely points
to files on the PVR.
Thanks for your reply anyway Martin. I appreciate it! Take care.
>PVR or PAR?<
If you have PCI, get the PVR. If you don't have PCI, get PCI and go PVR.
>Which Pentium<
For 3DS MAX, dual pentium would be best.
>Adaptec 3940?<
Only if you PCI mobo supports PCI Rev 2.0. My Dell XPS 100 doesn't.
>Which drives and how many of them?<
For NT, get 2 identical Fast/Wide SCSI2 drives, hook them up to a 3940W, use NT
RAID and you'll fly.
>RAID?<
To expensive, except for servers.
>NT or 95 or both?<
Use NT for everything you can, and 95 for what doesn't work in NT. Mainly
games, but you can dual boot.
>>>Adaptec 3940?<
>>Only if you PCI mobo supports PCI Rev 2.0. My Dell XPS 100 doesn't.
3940 doesn't work with earlier Rev? Does the 3940W also fall into that
category?
cause you also recommend…
>>For NT, get 2 identical Fast/Wide SCSI2 drives, hook them up to a 3940W, use
NT RAID and you'll fly.
NT RAID is a RAID OS for the 2 drives? And the 3940W is preferred?
Thanks Heaps!
