#Help! PAR ouput ?????

I've worked with BETA-SP decks many times at my job ( A / V guy at a convention
center)
Every time I've used BETA SP decks in the past I've had to connect four BNC
connecters, ( Red, Green, Blue, and Sync, (( sometimes there are 2 syncs, both
Hor. and Vert.) But Componant has always been (for me anyway) "R-G-B" .
So now I get a call from a good friend who's compnny just rented him a BETA
deck for an animation and he calls me with this question….
He said…." My animation is coming out of the BETA deck and I only see the top
half of it, it looks like it is rolled over"
I said… " It sounds like a sync problem, Did you connect the R,G,B and the
sync from the PAR? " ( I've only used the composit output from my PAR, but I do
remember wondering why the componet adapter only had three plugs)
Now he says….. " What R-G-B?, I have CAV?"
So I look in the Manual and sure enough there is " R-Y, B-Y, and Y ( plus a GPI
Freeze) that make up the CAV/GPI in
So can someone please help? (The deck's costing his company a pretty penny and
the animation is due tuesday.

Our company did a similar thing last year and this year for me. I had a big
horizontal bar across the screen last year when I recorded the animation. I
couldn't get any help in the middle of the night, and it had to be back in the
AM, so I just recorded it. I was asked weeks later why the sync was not there.
I didn't understand it at first, and this year was going to be a repeat, but I
was able to call the video house, and they said "Do you have the sync hooked
up?" I did not. I hooked it up, and all was well.

Mine has four. Three BNC's and an RCA. I hooked the RCA to the sync, and all
was well.

FYI, the RCA connector is a GPI trigger. The sync is a BNC on the board
itself.

Thank you for correcting me on what that cable was, and where to find the real
Sync connnector!
As I look at my manual, I am still confused as to what is happening.
The other three BNC connectors are 1. Video out. 2. Genlock Loop. 3. Genlock
In.
#2 and #3 are new terms for me. I am assuming #3 is the proper connection for
the Sync. Would that be correct? Does this connect to the Beta Cam (for next
time)? I don't have a "black burst or color bar signal that is time base
corrected.

The PAR will output three types of video signals as you know: composite; Y/C;
and component Y,R-Y,B-Y. The betacam SP decks require sync to be fed
externally no matter what video signal you feed them if the sync switch is set
for external. Some beta decks always need this sync to be external and have no
sync switch. The easiest way to do this is hook up the composite video output
from the PAR to the sync input of the betacam deck. If you also need composite
video you can loop it through the composite video in and then to the sync input.
Most of the time you will be using a component or Y/C signal but, again, in all
cases you need sync and can get it from the composite video signal. The PAR
manual references "genlock loop thru" This is NOT a sync or black burst signal
_from_ the PAR. The genlock loop through is used to establish a common timing
reference when using the PAR/TBC4 and any other video sources in connection
with editing equipment. Again, use the video composite output for reference
sync when the PAR is the source.

Thanks for clarifying that Don. Video is a whole new wonderful world to
explore! When I borrowed the BetaCam deck, I had never seen so many switches
on a recorder. The last time, they had the "record inhibit" on, and I couldn't
get that thing to work without outside help. Fortunately someone from work had
experience with it, and was able to help me figure it out.

DonL has you covered on the other questions, all I would add is that if you are
not doing a loop through any video connector which has this capability, make
sure to terminate the second connector! Many units have a small switch near
the connector, with the PAR you have to add an external terminator yourself
when you supply sync, if memory serves.

Network terminator are usually 50 ohm. Video terminators are usually 75
ohm.
