I was just wondering if anyone has tried using "RAM Doubler" with 3DS, and whether there are any issues, etc.? Thanks, Michael

Michael; >> "RAM Doubler" That is an interesting thought. I have wondered for years if Stacker would allow one to get double the RAM. I'm interested in input on this one too. Dennis

Hello Dennis! Stacker is only used to compress data on the hard drive. It has no affect on your ram. Programs such as RamDoubler and SoftRam95 use memory management and data compression of data already in ram as well as virtual memory to make the computer act as if you have doubled your physical ram. I use SoftRam95 and find that it does not like a permanent swap drive and will sometimes lose its compressed ram portion. It has not crashed Windows. I have read in the forum where RamDoubler is that some people are also having problems with that program. From my own experience I would say that there is no substitute for the real thing. JD3

John; >> Stacker is only used to compress data on the hard drive. I have stacker 3.0. I have been using it for at least one to two years, and have had absolutely no problems with it. I thought I remembered reading in my manual that you could use stacker on RAM. It appears that Stacker will allow a RAM Drive (pp142 in my manual). How well it works, I don't know, but that was the reason for continuing the thread. I wondered if anyone had tried it. >> Programs such as RamDoubler and SoftRam95 Thanks for mentioning these programs and their limitations. I was unaware of them. >> From my own experience I would say that there is no substitute for the >> real thing. You are probably right, but at the cost of RAM, and since MAX will be needing more because of NT, it might be worth a test. As far as Stacker goes, I guess it would only loose whatever was in the RAM Drive if it crashed. If no-one mentions they have tried it and failed, I may do this myself in the next few months. Thanks for shedding new information on this, Dennis

Dennis, >>It appears that Stacker will allow a RAM Drive (pp142 in my manual). >>How well it works, I don't know, but that was the reason for continuing >>the thread. I wondered if anyone had tried it. I am sorry I misunderstood your question. I used a Ram drive(not Stackers) until I realized I was just wasting ram. The Ram drive gets its own device letter and you can read and write to it the same as a hard drive but faster. The problem is that windows cannot use that ram for anything and if I am rendering something, I want the ram for the program and am willing to take the slower read/write to the hard drive. JD3 BTW I used Stacker 3 until Dos 6. It is a great program!

Ernie.. You might want to try OS/2… The virtual disc does the paging and 3DS never sees paging (reports 0 all the time) so presumably you don't have the problem of re-starting 3DS to stop page faulting every time if you're low on ram. It seems to work that way to me anyway. -john-
