#PER problems

Have been having many problems getting the new PER installed on a 90Mhz Pentium
Micron M54PI. The Micron M54PE is recommended, also the American Megatrends
TitanII but is quite $$$. The Per boards block other slots and in the case of
the Micron PI, also the CPU fan is in the way. What have people had good
experiences with( i.e. Mboards)? Also, it seems In:Sync is having major
problems with SpeedRazor drivers, etc., and our support folks here refuse to
deal in it. We need a stable board, of course, and have spent a month trying to
sort this out. Who knows what???? thanks

We're about to take the PVR plunge, and were going to buy a new Micron P120 box
to use as the editing station. It, in turn… will be networked to our SGI and
we'll send our animation files over the network to the PC so we don't tie up
the SGI doing any editing chores.
Your comments about fitting the PVR into the Micron motherboard layout has me
concerned as well. I just got the mobo layout last night and I see that the
PCI slots are right on top of the CPU which has a fan/heat sink! It looks like
you might squeeze the PVR into the "shared" slot (J16?) as the components
apparently face that way. Then I'm thinking the TBC card could go in the far
right slot with the video card and ethernet card in the center because they are
relatively short lengths.
Any light you could shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm
thinking a Gateway 133 might be an alternative, but they are almost a month in
"building" your computer while Micron is usually 10 days to 2 weeks. Gateway
uses the Intel mobo and maybe that layout is better?
Another question I have (for you and others) is how well you think Diamond
stacks up against Matrox with regard to drivers and overall support. The
Gateway has the Millenium board as an option. Thanks in advance for the help

Thanks Mike, for the reply. Have no new word on MBoards except that the newest
Micron is a 54 HI, I believe, but the chip is still obstructed if you need to
use a SCSI controller in one slot and the MBoard has only 3 PCI slots (from
what I can tell from the limited info Micron has supplied). Gateway uses, I
believe, the Intel MBoard which also has the "problem." BTW if you are using
the onboard (on the MBoard) scsi controller you 'might' be able to get this
to work. That would limit you to IDE as your boot drive. From my limited info
the SCSI card that controls the Par Drive must be located in the #1 PCI slot
(Int 11) (looking from the front of the MBoard, the remaining slots are to the
left) Hope I haven't confused the issue irreparably-but we are at our wits end
here and are grabbing at straws.

I think we'll be going the PCI PVR route and will also have the AD-2500
daughterboard. Now we are searching for a board/system that will carry both
without hitting them… and still allow enough extra slots for network,
scanner, modem and video cards. Hopefully it'll also have built in dual
channel EIDE, FDD controller, 2 serials and 1 parallel.
Did I understand you right that the PAR's disk controller is not built into the
PAR itself? I was under the impression that these cards had built-in
controllers and all one had to do is run a ribbon cable from the card to the
drive, connect the power cable and that was it.
Lastly, I'm not on the net (yet) so I've been calling DPS once in a while for
advice… but they have meager tech support availability, but once you get'em,
they are fine.

Mike,
The PAR does have IDE hard disk control directly on the board – for PAR
use only, not as a system disk. You might look into the AMI (American
Megatrends) Dual Pentium 10-slot board (4 PCI, 6 EISA, none obstructed, up to
120 MHz).
