#New system crashing

I've recently upgraded an old box with a new Super Micro P55CM motherboard.
(Pentium 133 Mhz.) 32meg RAM, Diam. Stealth 64 VRAM 4meg.
I'm going nuts with this thing. I can't get 3ds R3 to talk reliably to either
hard drives when I'm playing with a large model. I've stripped it down to
nothing and it still crashes….

When I load a large model (objects=580,faces=215,000,vert=112,000) and try to
render, it crashes about the time it would swap to disk. Also if I save the
file a bunch of times it will usually crash, and sometimes it will crash when I
read it in.
Small models (32k faces don't have this problem).
I don't know what to try next. This has been going on for 4 days! This model
used to render and swap fine with my old 486 board.
The other difference is this EIDE controller is built into the mboard.
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what's going on, but the "files=100" is not neccssary at all.
Reduse this to 40.
Also, try not to load any device drivers that's associated with harddrives,
like the VDISK.
I'm just give you some suggestion. Hopefully it will make a difference.

Have you checked the Dongle, perhaps you have damaged it, or the port when
you upgraded,?
Or the DS card could be causing some sort of Interfernce, I had a devil of a
time trying to get it working when I upgraded, what driver are you using?
Are the Drives formatted ok and free of bad areas e.g. a scan disk on them,
Are you using dos 6.2 or that Ibm 7 thing?
oh! and did you check the leads to and from the Hard Drives poer leads etc,
and is 3D's the only programme that crashes?
Best of Luck, the only other thing I can think of is why 3D's is paging for
Small models, I have almost the same machine as you and LenZFX is the main
reason for paging in my case, have you checked you RAM, and its setting in
Bios (or what ever you have on your Motherboard?).

I said it wrong, Small models DO NOT page, and DO NOT crash. Whenever, I try
to go to the disk, it crashes. That can be when a large model swaps, or even
if I save a model and write out to the disk.
I'm using DOS 6.2.
I've dongled the dongle, seems to be OK. This is the only software that
crashes. I run Photoshop under windows and it swaps like crazy and has not
crashed.

Ug!, this sounds really wierd, perhaps reinstalling 3D's might help, did you
reinstall any IPAS?
Did you check the HD with scanddisk?

Well Greg we're on the same wave length. I have reinstalled 3ds 3 times. I
have scanddisk'd both my drives. I am not running any iPAS at this point. (I
didn't reinstall them.)

ug! I'm stuck on what to suggest, unless your master 3D's disk have gone
wrong somewere, do you have aspare copy or a freind that can lend you his/hers
original disks,
Have Autodesk suggested anything?
If all this has fallaid it must be A: 3D Studio or B: the mother Board or
Harddisks, perhaps 3D's doesn't like your Hardisk Controllers, ot the Rom
Bios are set wrong?

I don't have an extra copy of 3ds kicking around.
I've decided it must be a board/BIOS issue. I'm leaning toward BIOS. I sure
would like to hear from someone who is using a Super Micro Mboard with an IDE
controller. I may just get a replacment and see what happens.
I have not heard from Autodesk.

We've had similar reports in the past that were tested and corrected by
focusing on the hard disk controller. Are you able to disable the onboard
controller and use a seperate hard disk controller card inorder to test your
system/3ds?

I have one coming in tomorrow. It turns out it is very hard to find an
external PCI EIDE controller these days because all the boards have them built
in.

No problem, Steve, I've also heard that there is a way to motify the 3DS.set,
or exe file, to get a clean 3DS loadup. I'm not too sure how to do it, but you
can contact Autodesk.
