I'm looking to get MSVC++ for MAX and other development and saw mention that
VC++2.2 is required for MAX. With VC++ 4.0 around the corner should I get that
instead? I assume you will be able to use 4.0. Since you can only get 2.2 with
the subscription it would probably be cheaper to wait.

At the time we ship, we'll be using the most recent shipping version.
