#NT up and running

Dave, NT is a true 32-bit system. The 16-bit programs we all have now require some juggling by NT to run. When I put Photoshop 3.0.4 on NT it flew. But its a 32-bit program. The 16-bit programs are only a shade faster. I think your limitation on your speed is the video card. I've got ATI Mach 64 boards in our pentium 100s and they are fast. But we've had a LOT of trouble with them running Premiere 4.0. I got Premiere for a great deal and like it but its clumsy for use with the PAR. In that respect Razor is better, but Razor doesn't have the neat filters and special effects that Premiere does. Elastic reality is good but the transitions and fades are not presented as a thumbnail in out version. Premiere shows exactly what you are going to get. So in general I'm staying with Razor until Adobe gets its together. If your thinking about changing video cards I would go to a OpenGL or GLint card directly. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The preview rendering will be supported under MAX through OpenGL (I think). As an alternative, get another Diamond card like the Viper. I can't recommend the ATI card anymore. The drivers are just too flaky. As to drivers under NT, so far I've had no trouble. Glad you told me about the Turtle Beach drivers. I'm using the Monterrey for output to the VTR and I hadn't installed that yet. Send me more NT wisdom as you come across it. I just started with it this week. Also I've been looking for OpenGL screensavers and routines and can't find any. Bye.

Hey Mark, Man this is getting to be such a bummer. I think I'm going to reinstall plain old WFWG tomorrow. At least everything works. I'm getting _very_ frustrated by the lack of support for NT. It really irks me that vendors like Turtle Beach are developing Win95 drivers before NT. NT has been out for a long time. Drivers should have been created long ago. I don't know about my video card either. As I said it was faster under WFWG than it is under NT. I do plan on getting an OpenGL card though, as soon as I get a new computer. I've got an old 486/66 ISA bus. Also, I did FTP the NT PAR drivers from DPS and I can play anim's off of the PAR using the DPS player but the razor player will not work. Also, everytime I open the NT player it says that CTL3D32.DLL has not been properly installed. It then opens up and works ok. Any ideas? Maybe I installed it in the wrong place. Also, along those same lines I cannot get any of the 3rd party filters to work in Photoshop. I've copied all the plugins to the plugins directory but no matter where I put the .DLL's the plugins don't show up. Any more ideas? Without support for the PAR or sound etc. etc. etc. NT is useless to me. I really just want to scream right now. I haven't had to deal with this much BS in a long time. If you can offer any fixes I'd really appreciate it. Thanks DM

Did you delete WFWG first? if you did then that is your problem. They need to coexist and share resources. Also do you have 3.51 or 3.5? Let me know.

>>Did you delete WFWG first? Yup. Why is that a problem? What I did was install a new hard drive altogether. My C: was a 340 Mb so I replaced it with an 850. I've got 3.51. Well, I got razor up and running – although it won't open the library when it comes up. It just sits at the logo screen till I left click. Well, hopefully I can figure this out. Because I'm not installing WFWG on this drive and then reinstalling all my software just so I can install NT. Figures I would have gone about this wrong. It's been that kind of week for me. <G> DM

Yeah, I hate when that happens. I left WFWG on the drive "just in case" . NT said to install itself in the same directory os regular windows "to share resources". Will let you know…

Hey Dave, You should check out the seperate forums for NT support (such as photoshop and the plug-ins you use, etc.) in order to get the most up to date info. However, I know that you will need to make sure you have photoshop 3.0.4 in order to have any support of 16 bit plug-ins at all, and even then things like KPT, etc, are not guaranteed to work until they have been upgraded to 32-bit like photoshop itself. I know it is going to be a frustrating time, but you should really use a dual boot set-up until the programs you need have all converted to 32-bit, NT compatable. I am recently embarking on this route, and definately need dual boot. Doug

Thanks for the info Doug. I'll take a look and see what ver. of Photoshop I have. I do have dual boot setup. I guess I may have to install WFWG also eh? What a crock. Thanks again. DM
