Hello
Does anyone know of a Software only that will compress BMP or TGA files into
MPEG1 or MPEG2. Something that I do not need a Math degree to get it to work.

Yes, it's called Xing-CD. It ain't cheap, but it seems to work.
Just what do you need to PLAY .MPG files, anyways? Or – what would be the BEST
way to play them?
You need what's called a codec (for "code-decode"). Codecs come in two
varieties; software and hardware. Xing-CD is a software codec. The quality of
the playback with software codecs depends on the speed of your hard disk, bus,
video card, etc.. If your machine can't play MPEG back quickly enough without
a little help, then you need a hardware codec. Many new video cards are coming
out with hardware codecs either built right into them, or as "daughter-cards"
which attach on to the video card. The cards with them built in go for about
$350.00.
I've been told about several software codecs available in the software
forums here, but being new to Compuserve, I haven't figured out where they are
or how to download them. I'm after one myself, so if I find one, I'll tell you
how to get it.

If you find one, do, indeed, make a note to let me know where to find it. I'd
like to play around with MPG videos a little. In any case, I would think they
would be more effecient for playing videos than .MOV's and possibly .AVI's,
even if you don't have a HW codec.
I will take a quick look under the file finder using the keyword "codec".
That's usually the best way to find files pertaining to specific things like
that.

type GO COMANIM and check the MPEG video section. There, you will find
"CMPEG"
for converting .TGA's into an .MPG and "VMPEG" that is a software .MPG
playback program.
