#allocate image buffer
12 messages in this thread
Hallo Bob!!
With my P90, 200 MB RAM and 3DS4, Driver Vibrant and running Windows 3.11 I
tried to render a simple stage ( font for a photo) 3 MB large with 4 lamps and
only 2 objekts. But 7200 x 6000 Pixel 24 bit tif. to work with in a 1200 dpi
image 4 x 5 inch.
A size, very absolutly normal for me. I got the following error message:" Can't
allocate image buffer / and… init of driver failed. Is it
possible with 3DS4 or do I have to change to the MAC Sculpt to render large
sizes?
At least I have to render 8- 9 000 Pixel images do you have a solution??
I hope so because I like the most to work with 3DS.

This message usually shows up when you have run out of disk space, and your
image buffer memory space cannot be allocated. Since your final output file is
about 220 megs, I hope you have plenty of disk space available!
LAM
Hallo Larry Minton !
I didn't know that "buffer " is also used with disk space.
I have cleant my disks tonight, so I have enough space for a lot of this
pictures.
Thank you very much!

Unless your computer has about 512 meg RAM (for this project you are talking
about), the swap file is created to "extend" your memory. 3ds puts in a
request for memory, PharLap tries to allocate it in real memory and in swap
space, runs out of disk space, and returns an error to 3ds saying that the
memory allocation failed. Hence 3ds gives the error message about being unable
to allocate memory.
LAM
Hallo LAM
The information about the destination of the swap-file and the image-path has
resolved the prob. Is there any way to get a workaround for holding the swap
destination on the specified swap-path w i t h target image on same
partition?
Anselm
In your 3ds directory, do a "cfig386 3ds.exe". What is shown is the default
PharLap configuration parameters. To change your swap path to the root of D:,
type in "cfig386 3ds.exe -swapdir d:\". It would be a good idea to make of
copy of 3ds.exe before you do this <g>.

Hallo LAM!
Now I work with different disks for "swap" and "images" Since than I have no
problems when rendering large files.
Lam would you kindly tell me one more thing.
In the moment I run 3DS4 under windows 3.11 with a special cfig386.exe
configuration I 've got from Hr. Jankowski Tepe ( my german distributor) to
adress all my 196 MB RAM on 3DS. But 3DS runns faster when using DOS, adressing
only 16 MB.
Can you tell me what version of Quemm I have to take to adress the 196 MB when
running DOS. And do you have a special configuration for this?? (config.sys,
3DS.set, cfig.exe …..)
Anselm
Anselm,
Your 3ds.set and cfig settings shouldn't need to be changed when running under
dos.
As for qemm, here is a msg I keep around <g>:

Certain Pentium-based machines need a little kick start when trying to get
them to recognize more than 64Mb of RAM. Here's the secret (courtesy of Jamie
Clay in the Autodesk VPG):
First, does all the memory count up during initial boot?, if so read on…
o Get QEMM 7.04 (actually you can't yet purchase this, but you can get the
patch to QEMM 7.x on CIS in the QEMM forum)
o Then you use the(undocumented) SCANMEM command to display the amount of
memory the machine has. SCANMEM returns a memory range called USERAM.
o That range then needs to be plugged into the QEMM386.SYS's USERAM
option in the CONFIG.SYS.
Example: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM USERAM=XXXXX-XXXXX
From there it works like a champ. Note – you needed to add the RAM option
to get Windows to work with it.

Hallo Larry!
My image directory is on a disk with ,in the moment, 800 MB free disk space. My
render size is 4800 x 6000 pix.. I still get the same error message. can you
help?
Anselm Cosler
Is your swap file going to the same disk as your image files? Usually, your
swap disk is the disk where your 3ds.exe file is. You change the swap disk by
running cfig386, which is documented in the 3ds Installation Guide. Just make
sure you don't set your swap disk to a network drive <g>. It would tend to
slow things down a tad….
If you are swapping to a disk that has plenty of room, leave another message
giving your configuration (ram, # disks, load directory, image directory, etc).
LAM
Hallo Anselmo!
How have you been? Your render sizes are huge! Are you actually rendering
while running WFWG or are you firing up 3DS under DOS? As Larry pointed out
your final image size is about 220mb's, are you swapping to disk during your
renders? If so you will need a ton of additional free disk space. Do you have
SAVE-LAST-IMAGE on as well? If so you may have a huge file which you could
delete to free up some space.

Hallo Robert!
I haven't rendert such a large file jet.
But I was to lasy to make a photo of that difficult background I need for a
digital image.
I cleaned up my disks, so I have enough disk space ( 6GB). I also have swap
file about 400 MB. I'll try again and tell you later!
Thank you very much!
