Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what video card is supported by 3DS and World Builder? I am in the process of building another system to net to my present one and I am having difficulties weeding my way through literature, which is full of promise, and hardware, which is full of compromise. I am willing to go as high as $800, maybe higher if the card is worth it. If there is anyone who is presently running a system with both 3DS and WB, and is having few to no conflicts with their video cards, I would greatly appreciate some insight. TIA, charles

Charles, I use a 4meg ATI Pro Turbo and its fine, but I think I would get a 4meg Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM or the Diamond Viper Video VRAM card. They both have acceleration to 30fps for AVI files. The ATI doesn't. Just make sure its 4meg so you can get 1024×768 at 24 bit color. World Builder may or may not have a problem with the 24 bit part of the program. Digimation is looking at it now. I can't get it to run on my Pentium but the 16 bit program is great! Saving TGA files is no prob. They're still 24 bit.

Just a suggestion from experience… If you're going to buy Diamond make sure you or someone you know has seen one doing what you want to do first… Don't believe the advertising or manuals that come with the card. Drivers seem to be a serious problem for this company. -john-

Hi John, That is the point of this inquiry. I would like feedback from people actually using 3DS and WB with a medium to high end video card. Preferably with little to no problems. What video card do you use and with what programs? Are you experiencing any conflicts with drivers in 3DS and/or WB? TIA charles

Hi Charles I'm sure my story is NOT typical but I have been trying to get a respnse from Diamond for some time in their area here and so have a lot of people about a lot of Diamond cards by the looks of things. Try scanning the message areas in GO DMNDONLINE. I bought a Diamond Stealth 64 about 10 months ago and made the store salesman open the package to prove it worked with OS/2. According to the manuals it did.. There was even software droivers for it. Needless to say it didn't even install. Eventually I had to write to Diamond (I'm in the UK) to get any help I could. They were quite quick to supply drivers (From Amsterdam) but they dont work at all in True colour at 800×600 and throw flic data all over the screen at 640×480. I still cant use truecolour under OS/2 with this card. Under Windoze it's a great card. No complaints at all. Unfortunately I'm not prepared to run Microsoft OS/s any more. Thats a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM 2Mb… Needless to say it runs (for example 3D studio fine under OS/2 but just dont try swapping it out to another task, only works when it feels like it.) Under Dos 3DS works fine. Hope that's some help… I do reccomend GO DMNDONLINE to get a feel for their other cards. -john-

John, The only reason I would switch to the Diamond is because of Premiere. It won't run with the ATI card. Adobe knows it, ATI knows it, and they're working on it… The reviews say the Stealth Video is good. Opinion?

Hi Mark… I've no experience of Premier I'm afraid.. and my experience of Diamond is only what I've already put up here. I have noticed that software houses in all fields have been (to be polite) "falling over" over the last couple of years when it comes to supporting hardware. Personally I believe it has to do with the rather odd notion that you can write stuff in high level languages… Anyway…. The only advice I can offer is to fall back on… Just make sure you or someone you trust has seen the particular setup you want working in the way you want to use it. In the UK that usually means irritating the dealers and traveling miles for demonstrations of very simple things… Assuming the dealers can be bothered (It's like a third world country over here)…. Trust your eyes is all I can say. -john-

Thanks for the reply Mark. I don't necessarily need a board with digital video capabilities unless it just comes with the board, because I am getting a PVR with its daughter card. I am a bit confused about the second part of your reply, "World Builder …." Are you saying you have WB and it doesn't run with 24 bit or that you have heard it does not run with 24 bit? You "can't get it to run on my Pentium…." Is the "it" referring to WB, your ATI running in 24 bit, and/or WB and the ATI in 24 bit? I apologize for being so picky but these little problems are always the ones that end up being the bamboo shoots under your fingernails. Once again, thank you for the original reply and if you feel like replying to this then TIA. charles

No Prob! Ok, WB right now won't run in 24 bit with my ATI card, a Pro Turbo (Mach 64). Digimation is looking at the problem. They say they have that card and it runs fine for them. Its great in 16 bit and the TGA output files are 24 bit so output is unaffected. I tried WB on two different P100s and the problem appears to be the WB 24 it program, not the hardware. Hope this helps. All in all I've been real happy with the ATI cards. Bye!
