#Best Audio card for PAR?

We need to grab synced video/audio with the PAR, and need to get a good professional quality audio card, I know the Monterrey is a popular one, but it seems to be discontinued. (several mail order places aren't carrying them anymore) Should I still try to get one, or should I get something else, like the AWE 32, RAP-10, etc? Thanks, JNJ

There are only a few good reasonably priced sound cards out there for use under Windows 3.1. My 3 favorites are Digital Audio Labs Card D+, Roland RAP 10, and Turtle Beach. The best tech support was with the Card D+, its great, whenever I call there (mostly to pester them about making NT drivers for their card!) A PERSON answers the phone and you can actually TALK to them about their product (just like at in:sync!). The card is reasonably priced. Let me know if you need more details.

I've never heard of the D+ I'd like more info. No NT drivers? Definately a down side. We're trying to get the system running NT asap. Thanks, JNJ

John, I'm using a Turtle Beach Monterey. It has the best audio specs. AWE 32 drops off somewhat. I'm recording all of my audio, music, etc. to the hard drive first, then mixing it in Razor or Wave and shooting it back out to tape. Sound really good.

Thanks Mark, we'll probably go with the Monterey. Are you running NT with it? JNJ

John, Liked you idea about the Dolby/Surround. Would put some sound engineers out of business… Turtle Beach is writing the NT drivers as we speak so they should be out soon. There is an article out this month in Digital Video about sound editors and sound sync you might want to read. The editors article talks about the TB products. I use Wave for Windows for sound editing and Quad Studio for mixing myself. They're cheap and they work. You can get Quad bundled with the Monterey card too. Have Fun! Bye!

Thanks Mark. The Monterrey sounds like the way to go, thanks for the NT info. Someday someone will take my ideas and run with them.. 🙂 I can't work on them all! JNJ

>Turtle Beach is writing the NT drivers as we speak so they should be out soon.< I was looking at getting a TB card. From what I have read on the WinNT forum TB has been promising NT drivers for over 2 years. I wouldn't count on seeing drivers when they say, though hopefully I am wrong.

Tim, I'm using a Turtle Beach Monterey card in NT 3.51 with drivers from a 3rd party vendor, his name is Peter Haller. The drivers are on the MULTIVEN Forum under the Turtle Beach lib section. The drivers only support the Multisound, Monterey and the Tahiti cards. -Mike

I have heard of people having trouble getting the AWE32 working under NT too, so this may not be a viable soultion. I will try to get you a phone number for the Card D+… (If you want it right away, call me or anyone at insync on our 800 864 7272 number and ask for the #.)

>I have heard of people having trouble getting the AWE32 working under NT too, so this may not be a viable soultion.< Yeah, I thought the monterrey would be better. I'm not too sure about a "generic" card like the Card D+.. it may be good, but I'm sceptical on lifespan of driver support, etc. (remember that "ancient" thing called the Targa?) If they haven't been interested right away, I'm not too sure about whether they'll go with NT soon or not. But since you all use, and recommend it- I give it more hope than I would otherwise. Whenever you find the info, I'll check them out. (and pester them about NT drivers for ya while I'm at it. <g>) You all need to get with Yost Group and develop a way to generate 3D sound by attaching .wav files to MAX's objects, and sticking ears on the camera, and "rendering" the sounds it'd hear. 🙂 Then license Dolby Surround, and DTS, and encode it for some wonderful uses. It'd make you big bucks. (just give me a copy) 😉 Thanks, JNJ

>>Monterrey… Hey John, I have a brand new TB Monterrey that I'll part with – a Really Good Deal. After I bought it I decided I would be better off with a lower-end card for what I was doing, so I bought a different TB. (I was going to send it back for a refund but I was so busy with work that I forgot all about it – it's still sitting on my shelf, in the box, complete with the optional MIDI adaptor.) Interested? Hey John, haven't heard from ya in a while 🙂 I'm interested in the Monterrey, but it's not my checkbook. E-mail me, and I'll check on it with the pen holder. 🙂 I don't think we'll need the midi adapter though. JNJ
