#3d accel cards
8 messages in this thread
Scott,
I've heard many great things about the Matrox Millenium card. It is a
3d accellerator
and is compatible with many api's and drv's but I'm not sure if it is
compatible with 3ds Max.
Its $300 price range has made me very interested! If you find out any news on
3ds Max compatibility with this card please let me know.
sincerly,
Carl
Thanks Carl, I'll keep my eyes open for any info on that card. I am trying to
get as much info together ASAP, since I will have to upgrade my computer in
DEC. to prepare for the beta version of MAX.

Are we talking about 3DS MAX cards?
I am in the process of assembling info on all the known cards that support
OpenGL and Hoops (HDI).
How about 8megs of VRAM and 8megs of DRAM for 1600×1200@24bit. Not too bad!
Drop me a note.
Mark
Mark, when I talked to a sales person at Omnicomp, they told me the Omnicomp
card is what will provide the "full color " real time feedback from MAX. Their
8 meg card will provide this true color feedback at 1024 x 768 in MAX. It's
only the price tag that is a bummer.

Scott,
Sounds good. I'm in the process of assembling all the MAX components I can find
like P6's, DEC Alphas, video boards, etc. to build high-end systems. I have the
Omnicomp literature and I'll look at it again tomorrow. I'm not sure it
supports the Hoops (HDI) interface which is the key for MAX. Also 8 megs of ram
might not cut (hard to believe isn't? egads!) The Accel card I'm looking at has
8 megs DRAM and 8 megs VRAM. Does 1600×1200@24 bit. Now that may be extreme for
Beta or SVHS (my format) and I would pick the same card with lower memory (for
1280×1024) but the card is going to be really fast (smokin'!) because of the
dual video pipelines it has, OpenGL chip set for 3D and a S3 968 accel chip for
2D. I'm crying over the price but it is still better than those Nazis at
Intergraph. I can get DEC Alpha motherboards with 8 chips on it for around
$20k. Thats resonable. No way at Intergraph.
There are some other cards out there, some not released yet, that are going to
be good. We'll see.
I have a question that can't seem to get answered. The Glint chip, is it a
wannabe OpenGL chip? The dedicated OpenGL cards I have specs on seem to be a
little better than the Glint stuff. Opinion?
Talk to you soon.
Mark
Mark,
I can't give a very accurate opinion, since I have heard of the card you're
describing, but not seen any specs or demos of them. The Glint card is directly
supported by Max, because they [Omnicomp] are supposed to be writing the video
drivers with Gary Yost/Yost Group. I have NO confirmation from Adesk, although
it was significant that Adesk used their card for them demos!

Scott,
Yeah, I've heard a lot od stuff lately. I think we will just have to wait and
see after the dust settles.
I'm going to a Autodesk sponsored MAX demo in Austin, TX tomorrow so may be I
can get some true facts.
Later!
Good for you Mark! Let me know what they're telling folks now!
