#NT 4.0 Shell
7 messages in this thread
If you're making the move to NT, or have already, in anticipation of 3DS MAX. I
highly recommend trying out the NT 4.0 shell available on line. It has the Win
95 interface and makes a big difference.
I haven't run into any bugs, but seeing this is still beta software I am sure
there are many out there.
Can't wait for MAX.

Paul,
I downloaded the update to go from 3.5 to 3.51 and I downloaded the 2mb new
shell file. The update won't run because it says it's not an NT application and
the shell wont install because it says it's missing some files. Any idea? I
have a feeling that there's going to be a whole NT forum here soon.

I can't remember for certain, but I think I ran it either from DOS or from a
DOS Prompt under NT. FWIW, mine installed perfectly. Hope this helps.
BTW, I guess the shell is called the "NT Explorer" according to the text that
runs up the side of the "Start" menu.

Is this update to go from 3.5 to 3.51 or is this a bug fix for users of 3.51.
Why would they stick an update on Cserve for free if they sell it in stores? By
the way I did run it from the NT DOS prompt – no go.

The upgrade from NT 3.5 to 3.51 is named the 3.51 "Step-Up" ugrade. I don't
really know what it fixes, but I do know it allows you to add the NT 4.0 shell,
called the NT Explorer.
I called Microsoft (and go through after a mere 35 minutes of pass the
customer). The rep said the 3.51 Step-Up upgrade is free to those who
purchased NT after April 95, but shipping from MS costs about five bucks.
Optionally, you can buy the upgrade from your favorite retail outlet. I got
mine from CDW for about fifteen bucks.
Once you have successfully installed the 3.51 upgrade, you can download the NT
4.0 shell from the GO MSDR forum. The Explorer shell is intended for
developers only, however, they don't care who downloads and uses it. By using
it you essentially forfeit support for NT because you're using beta code.

Hi David,
There is a update charge to NT 3.51 and it should be available at your local
computer supermarket. It sounds like you downloaded the Service Pack for NT 3.5
(SP1 & SP2 are patches), this is not a 3.51 update. There is a 3.51 Service
Pack also, it's called SP1 and this only fixes minor driver bugs (printers
etc.). Once you have 3.51 going the shell should install without any problems.

There is a NT forum. GO WINNT. There are some MS people who stop by. Mostly
users all hungry for answers who don't want to pay Big Daddy Bill his $150 for
NT support.
