My meshes imported from ACAD sometimes have a face or section of faces created together with normals on the inside of an object, so when tested or rendered I only get a transparent face. I know that setting the faces materials to two sided would solve this, but how can I adjust the faces normal to the opposite side to prevent the need for two sided materials and the inherent slow down. Any help greatly appriciated.

As kevin said, use the 3D Editor's Surface\Normals\Flip commands or use the Optimize Plug-In's interactive method. You're est et is to actually model correctly for mesh output in AutoCAD – one golden rule prevails: Every face of the same mesh needs to share 2 vertices with ever adjacent face. If they don't, the normals are erratic. If they do, they'll have correctly unified normals every time (although the entire mesh may sometimes need to be flipped). Check out Chapter 11 of Inside 3D Studio – lots of detail on this there. – Phil

Thanks for the tip, got that sussed now, but why is it now that if I get about three or four complex objects into 3DS the whole lot corrupts with vectors flying off everywhere? Its driving me mad!!!

If you are getting model corruptions, it is usually a problem with the 3ds.exe having been modified or corrupted in some way, perhaps be a virus or a hard disk error. Re-installing from your original disks should solve the problem, and ensure that the hardware lock (dongle) is securely in place. -Peter

G'day Anthony, For CAD models with normals problems, I use the OPTIMIZE routine from the Yost Group. It has an excellent system for flipping the normals in question, and it all happens in a real time rendered mode so you can see the results and keep on tweaking until you are happy with it. Also, you can apply a two sided material to the problem object rather than using force two sided and shotgunning everything in scene. -Peter
