Some time ago, I heard on TV (don't recall the name of the show) about some big studios (Spielberg etc. Studio and others) "adopting" an animation package called Animo (spelled a little wrong, I think). I have not seen anything about this, as I (don't) recall. I gather that it is a 2D package from what I heard. Any light on this subject? Who makes it? Just curious, as usual. Thanks.

<<Animo I gather that it is a 2D package from what I heard. Any light on this subject? Who makes it? Cambridge Systems, I believe. Its a high end 2d system that runs on next step operating system and costs 30K for all the modules. Too rich for me, I will have to make do with AXA2d. Ed

<<Cambridge Systems, I believe.>> You wouldn't happen to have their fax number, or other details? Thanks. DaviD "b buffer" GouID

Animo Cambridge Animation Systems 818 762 6466 fax 818 762 6455 11417 Moorpark st North Hollywood CA 91602-200 or 44 223 311231 fax 44 223 350286 3, Kings Parade, Cambridge CB2 1Sj England works under next step for about 30K For a much cheaper system that works well AXA Corp. 17752 Mitchell, Suite C Irvine CA 92714 714 757 1500 fax 714 7571766 Works under windows for about 3 or 4K Softimage/ Toonz ( Microsoft ) 1 800 5763846 SGI program Toon Toon Boom Technology 514 5225142 fax 514 522 5971 Sgi (i think ) just out at Siggraph The only one Ive used is AXA which has a good exposure sheet program, 10 peg bars that move and zoom independently and can have any number of drawings on each one, pencil test of all layers, ink and paint with soft or airbrush layer, etc. What it dosnt do that costs many thousands more ( 20- 30K? ) is inbetweens , auto or smart ink and paint and resolution independent vector drawing. I Believe that a videopost plug in could be written for MAX that would do a lot of what these programs do. Enough so that those who do 2d as a small part of their business could get by without getting a dedicated package. Ed

It is high-end cell animation package that works only in 2D, though it had some nice features. DaviD "Anibino" GouID

Hi there over the seas, animo runs under the Next-Step-OS. It's designed mainly for supporting classical 2d cel-animation, with automated in-betweening, coloring and layering. You'will ne some extra fancy hardware add-ons (automated scanner etc) to get it running. Animo also extist in reduced functionality packages, starting at $15000, but they're very specialised then (kind like a ferrari without steering wheel…). You might look at two other products, which ar very competetive in price & power: Axa Producer, focused on classical cel-animation. Good package. Priced at (full version $4K). aaaand…. my discovery from Russia: Mania Broadcast, basicly a clone of the Sgi-basing software type like Eddie, Matador Wavefront composer and so on. Priced at $1.5K. If you're interested in further information or demo-versions, send me a e. Bye from Stuttgart, Germany Jan / Imagelab

Not sure whose demo you are talking about. Is it the demo for the Russian clone software and, if so, what O/S does it run on? This forum might not be the place but a place can be found, I am sure. Do they have a U.S. representative? How would the Russina clone compare to the new improved Animator Studio? Or do they not compare at all?

Hi Albert, i don't think animator studio and mania are very comparable. mania runs under Win NT and Win 3.xx. It's rather a 2.5 d composing and sfx package. You cannot paint cels in it. What it rathers does: You give it sequences of images, or avis, or txt or whatever. You add several layers. then you can add animated effects like warp filters, all kind of photoshop-alike filters (Bitmap-manipulations, transform filters), make one actor cloned 80 times to generate mass scenes, morph layer into another, move and scale and rotate (2.5d) them, accelerate or slow down their timing and so on and so on. look at the sgi type of software like eddie or matador. User-interface and Speed are very cool. It's a real cute program, and i suppose after 3ds bringing a class of software to the pc (3d-animation) mania does that with the classic 2.5d composers. I don't know about an u.s. representative, but here in germany, the program will start delivering in some weeks, so i suppose you didn't miss something yet. If you think that this forum is the wrong place for the discussion, then we should switch to private for further e. Bye Jan / Imagelab
