Just curious; you said your Mac Emplant emulation is running at the speed
of a Quadra 900. What is your system set-up?
I have an A2000, GVP '040 with 16 MB ram, WB 2.1. I allot 11 MB's of ram
for the Mac emulation. Although runs well and reliably, Adobe Photoshop
gets very sluggish if I start to do anything but minimal alterations to my
pictures.

Hey there! Your system is very similar to mine. I'm running a Zues
'040 w/ 16 mb of ram. I too also have about 11 megs allocated to the
emplant.
What you are experienceing is probably the virtual mem kicking in.
Click on the Photoshop icon once and "get info" on it (I forgot the Mac
eqivalent, but its there) and check the memory allocated. Chances are if
you're just starting up is that its set to 5mbs. Change to as high as you
can get it before the program fails to load initially. It may require
some restarts. Remember that Photoshop is a memory hog, and anything
under 32 or so megs will start causing the virtual mem kicking in. If you
have a fast HD that would help. Any filtering, or the Xaos tools filters
are serious memory hogs, so check what you have installed. If you don't
need it, diable it in the preferences.
If you're running at 24 bit on a RTG-wanna-be board, you will see a
tremendous lag on the screen updates. The actual program or processing is
really noticablly slower, but I could be wrong. This is because the mac
uses square pixels and the Amiga uses retangular ones, and there is a
display recalculation of some sort. I use the QV (quick video) option of
the EGS display to help speed things up.
Oh yeah, check out the mac forums for some cool multiveiwing utilities
that are available. If you just want to check out pixs, its quick.

I appreciate your helpful suggestions and will try them out. The hard
drive I have my system and Photoshop running from is a Maxtor 213. I have
a Picasso II board with 2 MB of ram on it.

Good luck! Is the Emplant running a 24 bit or 8 bit display? The 8
bit will be much faster, epecially if you use the QV (quick Video),
but games may act funny.
I usually use the 24 bit display but I'll try the 8 bit to see if
there is much improvement in speed.

You crazy dog! You've been using the 24 bit display this whole
time! Thats your reason! There is no way around the slowdown since
it has to do w/ the board's limitations and the pixel adjustment. It
was explained to me that alot f the RTG-wanna-be's are superVGA chips
that don't operate in the same way in 24bit as they do in 8 bit. As
far as the mouse, on the EGS they use software as opposed to hardware
to speed up the refresh. Thats why the mouse flickers on an EGS
board at 24 bit.
Switch to 8bit already! ;D
