#downloading

I am a new Amiga user, and I have been unable to download anything at all. I am
using A-Term and I have made the corrections (8 bits etc.) Help!! I'll download
anything at all just to achieve some success. (What does ARC mean?) Don't
laugh; I was smart enough to buy an AMIGA–now if I could just learn to use it
effectively. ?EX

Carolyn:
Welcome to the forum and welcome to the world of Amiga! By 'A-term' do
you mean AmigaTerm or ATERM?
In either case you might want to try 'capturing' some of the help files
in DL1 (they have the extension '.hlp' and can be searched for with the 'BRO
*.hlp' command at the DL1 ! prompt). Don't know if you are familiar with CIS
or not so…..to get to DL1 just type DL1 at the forum 'Function :' prompt. If
these don't help you then ask again but you might provide a little more
description of what happens when you do try to download.
If everything seems to go ok except that you can't find the files then
I would suspect that you are using the workbench and not the CLI. To be able
to see files on the Amiga you either have to use the CLI or have a utility that
runs from the workbench (such a DUII). Amiga WorkBench can not 'see' a file or
program unless there is an associated '.info' file. Of systems (such as CIS
can not have a file with more than 3 characters following a period in their
file name so it is not possible to download a file from most systems that can
immediately be used from the workbench).
ARC extension (files with '.ARC') are made with a utility that
compresses one or more file into a single shorter file. There are several
advantages to this since the file takes less room to store and less time to
download (cost you less) and a number of associated files can be kept together
in a single file. The de-ARCing utility is available here in the DLs. There
are help files in DL1 that explain more about ARChives and how to use the
utilities.

Carolyn,
I'm sure the solution is relatively simple…but I need a bit more
information. Can you give me a step by step description of how you are
attempting to download…and what error messages you are getting (if any) and
if they are from the program or from CIS.
Also…are you calling from the US or from Canada?
