#L200P vs L300/RIP-2

The company I work for is considering upgrading thier Linotronic hardware. They currently have a Linotronic L300/RIP-1 combination and are considering one of the following two options: 1) Dump the L300/RIP-1 system and purchase the L200P 2) Keep the L300 imagesetter and upgrade to a RIP-2 I personally feel the L300/RIP-2 combination would be the better choice because of the greater capabilities in handling complex documents in addition to having higher resolutions. I am pitted against a salesman who believes anything new (L200P) must be the greatest thing to date. The L200P is twice as fast as our current hardware, but would it be better than a L300/RIP-2 system? Thanks in advance! Jim

The L-200 isn't better than the 300…it's the same basic equipment & hardware, with a somewhat simpler configuration. Linotype introduced the L-200 to replace the low-end market (where the L-100 sat), not as an upgrade to the 300. The RIP-2 is SUBSTANTIALLY better than the RIP-1… it will increase your performance. Remember, though, when you compare the speed of the two machines (L-300 vs L-100) that the L-300's higher resolution and detail takes more processing time than it's younger brother…but you get much better results (you really can't do good color separation work on less than a L-300). -Scott Leyes

The L-200 is fundamentally different from the L-300 in "basic equipment and hardware," since it uses an infrared-light laser diode instead of a red-light gas laser. Because of the longer wavelength of infrared, and poorer imaging quality of infrared-sensitive photo materials, the new generation of diode laser machines produces a fuzzier image (a blurrier spot) than the gas laser machines. The inherent sharpness limitations of the L-200 make it a poorer choice than the L-300 for producing halftones and screens. An L-300 with the latest RIP is much "more" machine than an L-200.
