Help…Help

Bad news…you're probably out of luck on this one, at least as far as the
FPD is concerned.
Illustrator '88 is designed to work under TWO megabytes of RAM – it's a
memory hog compared to the old version – but it can operate properly with a
single megabyte on a Plus or SE. On a plain vanilla Mac Plus, you can get
moderately complex drawings to work before getting the "out of memory"
message…but detailed blends and masks can eat that up rather quickly.
Unfortunately, a Full Page Display takes a (heck) of a lot more effort to
redraw than a standard screen, hence your problem. From the way I hear things,
an FPD really isn't effective without an extra Meg of RAM – not just
Illustrator, but other apps as well.
Solutions? Well….
1) Get more RAM (Iknow it hurts, but it's worth it).
2) Don't use the FPD with Illustrator (I don't know how easy this is, if it
is possible to shut down the display's memory usage without removing the
board).
3)Use the "old" version of Illustrator (1.1). This isn't as odd as it seems:
most of the tools really haven't changed drastically, and the old Illustrator
uses A LOT less memory. If you're doing mostly Black & White art, it's fine.
ANd if you DO need one of the "new" tools (like autotrace or blend), then do
this in a file FIRST and save as an "Illustrator 1.1 compatible file". The only
things you'll lose in the conversion back are masks and patterns.
It's depressing, but these days one megabyte of RAM just isn't enough…
FullWrite won't let you do anything of merit under 1 meg, and Multifinder isn't
even much to shout about with 4 meg. geez…
