#Call Waiting
19 messages in this thread
Wow, it's been over a year since I've done any Amiga telecomputing. It feels
good to be back, and I've got a question. I now have call waiting with my
phone service (Bell), and I'm wondering how to turn it off temporarily via my
modem, a Practical Peripherals Hayes-type. Any takers?

Brent,
Prefix the number with a *70 to disable call waiting.
i.e. ATDT*70,555-1212
The comma is important to force a slight wait between the *70 and the phone
number.
David
David,
That does not work in all ESS switching centers. You should always double
check with your local BOC. -sja
If your company offers this ability, you can usually kill your call waiting by
inserting "*70W" between "ATDT" (or ATDP) and the number you are dialing. The
*70 is the number you dial to kill the call waiting, and the "W" is to instruct
your modem to wait a second or so(this value can be preset) for the tone block
feature which temporarily stops call waiting to activate. -Rick
*70W will NOT work if you are doing pulse dialing (unless you really have tone
service and are just ignoring it)……I don't recall the disable from pulse
dialed phones, but will look for it if you need it.
I didn't think that phone companies even provided call-waiting to lines that
only had pulse service. I could be wrong, though.

Vic,
I think that it's just dialing 70 and then waiting a bit longer for the
response.

David:
The code for canceling call waiting on pulse systems is 1170 although
just like the *70 solution it don't always work. I've also heard that there
were some other methods that are peculiar to the individual local fone co's.
There is supposed to be another method of programming the modem to wait a
longer time for disconnect, although I've never played with it.
-Mike
David, I checked the info for here, and you dial 1170 to kill it….haven't
tried it, but that's what the manual says. Victor A. Wagner, Jr.
No, :I: did'nt need it, myself, but thanks anyway. I stand corrected on my
error.-Rick
Brent,
to cancel call waiting (assuming your central office supports it) simply
change your 'dial initialization' string from ATST to ATDT*70W, this will dial
the *70 to cancel call waiting for the next call, and then wait a little for
dialtone again.
Call your phone company. *IF* your phone supports it, it's probably a key
sequence. In Boca Raton, you turned off call waiting by sending "*70" and then
your phone number.
A complete phone number might be:
*70,5551212
The comma makes the modem pause which gives the phone company time to switch
things around.
Good luck!

Brent! Good to see you again. Welcome back to the forum, and welcome back to
Usenet while I think of it (just read the posting about 2 minutes ago).

Thanks, Larry. Actually, I've been on both CIS and Usenet consistently, but
I've been away from my Amiga for a WHILE (I was serious about the dust). Work
can just really burn you out after a while, especially when it's programming
Windows applications. No flame intended, actually, I've come to respect
Microsoft for a good job considering the DOS they had to work with.
brent
Brent,
I am constantly in awe of those who can overcome MsDos and segmented
architectures to make them do anything at all. 🙂

Larry,
And you know something? Know that I think about it, just about everyone I
know that's programmed on an MSDOS system to any extent has an Amiga! Bright
folks, those! 🙂
Steve
Apparently you've forgotten who WROTE the operating system they had to work
with. It was MicroSloth. If they'd done it right to start with, they wouldn't
have these problems now. Victor A. Wagner, Jr.
