Rick – Thank you for the hint. The Amiga DOS 1.3 manual (Amiga DOS 1.3
Benutzerhandbuch, Deutsch) has only a table showing that e.g. density 4
corresponds to 300 dpi and that all dip-switches should be set to OFF. The
HP-Manual conversely describes in the appendix the functions of the Bank A
switches e.g. as defining the paper size, which tends to be A4 around here.
This description would imply that Sw A6 should be set to UP(contradicting the
manual ?) There is no comment about the other options available in Preferences
in Graphics 1 & 2. Are these of no effect ? -Alfred
The Graphic 1 and 2 selections in Preferences have various settings that can
alter output. I have mine set to Halftone dithering. The other selections don't
really apply for me.

Rick – I will try this setting. Would you know, whether there is already a
Deskjet Plus driver available? – Alfred
Creative Focus (Box 580, Chenango Bridge NY 13745-0580) sells the Super_DJ
driver. I have had it for a week and it worth every penny of the measly $25 it
costs. There is a freely-distributable Better_DJ driver available, probably
somewhere here, if you'd like a sample. It's not as good as Super_DJ, however.

Also look in the 1.3 docs under "The Prefs Drawer". In the American version,
it is pages 1-7 through 1-9. The Main heading is "The Workbench".

Ray – The comments are nearly in the same place. As I had only a Daisy wheel
printer before, all these setting were of no importance. The explanations are
only moderately clear to me. As far as I can gather 3 situations may be
distinguished: a) Typing letters b) Rendering half tone or color pictures c)
Rendering B & W graphs
The best settings for those situations may vary. I just thought there may be
some simple rule as to what would work best with this printer. When typing
letters I can only use Cour 10 in portrait mode or Cour 10 and alternatively
Cour 16 in Landscape mode.Other combinations, including Cour 20, although
settable on the printer will be reset by the software upon printing. Is this a
consequence of using a Deskjet only instead of a proper Deskjet Plus driver (if
available already)? – Alfred

From other threads I've read around here, using alternate
internal-to-the-printer fonts is a problem with the Amiga, not only on ink jet
and laser printers, but on dot matyrix ones, as well.
I've never delved into it, so I don't know if there's a work around. (Seems to
me I did hear of one, but can't remember what it was. Of course, my memory
could be faulty. That's the second thing to go past the age of 40, you know.)
