Which baud rate do you feel is most cost effective for someone who primarily
reads and sends messages? Thanks,

Not at all. If you spend 1 hour here reading messages, it will cost
you $12.75 at 2400 baud ($12.50/hr connect + .25/hr surcharge). To read the
same amount of messages at 300 baud will take *8* HOURS and cost you $50.00
($6.00/hr connect + .25/hr surcharge)!!! At 2400 baud, in it's first hour of
use, you've saved yourself $37.50.
Now…that doesn't include time spend in CO. That is more cost
effective at 300 baud.

Don, I just presumed that Rick was asking "what speed is the most cost
effective for a relatively new person to use for scanning, analysing and
learning about the system. I don't think he has been here long enough to
recognise member names, use commands like qs and other short cuts to save time
and still get the important data. Better to learn at 300 baud and save the
2400 baud for upload/download.
My answer was short and to-the point as I was saving money. <grin>

It's better to buy a 2400 baud modem, even if you only run it at 300
baud first…than to buy a 300 baud modem and then soon have to trade it in on
a higher speed.

Since 1200 and 2400 both cost the same here, then the question really
becomes which is better, 300 or 2400 baud….almost anyone can read faster than
300 baud and if you capture messages and read them off line, then you can get 8
times the information at 2400 baud than you can at 300 baud. The same goes for
leaving messages, if you compose them off line and upload them…then you can
upload 8 times the information in the same amount of time.
Since 2400 (1200) baud only costs about twice what 300 baud access
costs…you can do 4 times as much for the same amount of money…or you can do
the same amount of stuff for 1/4 the cost.
Remember..you save the most money by capturing the messages and reading
them off line, and composing any replies or new messages you want off line and
uploading them as ASCII dumps.
In any event, a 2400 baud modem will pay for itself in a very short
time period…get one, you won't be sorry.

If you capture messages, and reply offline, then 1200+ baud. If you
read online, and answer online, then 300. Thinking costs money here.

Doug, not true – it's still faster to read msgs at 1200 baud. The time you
should be at 300 is in the CO (always).
