Adobe Type Library packages for the IBM PC come with two downloaders,
PSDOWN for a serial interface and PCSEND for a parallel connection.
These utilities can be used to download printer fonts and other
files and to manage your PostScript language printer.
It does not sound like you have a complete Type Library package –
did you intend to buy this software with your other equipment?
It is possible that the downloader was included for its printer
management capabilities.

Thanks for your reply. Computerese is still pretty difficult for me and I
don't understand what you mean by a serial interface (my program is PSDOWN).I
don't understand how to use it. I paid for the additional fonts and the person
that I bought it from moved away. I can call him but he's very hard to reach
and CIS is so much faster.
What to you mean that the downloader was included for its printer management
capabilites? Sorry I'm so unsophisticated with all of this.

If your computer and printer communicate through a serial interface
(as opposed to parallel or "standard Centronics port) then you would
use PSDOWN to download fonts. If you did purchase an Adobe Typeface
package from this person, you should have the user's manual which
explains printer communication settings in detail.
What additional typeface packages did you purchase from him? Maybe
the fonts he spoke of are those that came resident in your printer
and if that is the case they are resident in ROM so there is no
need to download them.
If you did purchase an Adobe Type Library package from him and he had
previously registered the software, you will want to change the
registration over to yourself – to do this you must BOTH send a letter
to Adobe stating the change, that you have received said sofware and
documentation, and that he has relinquished all copies of said
software to you.
The PSDOWN program is also available in the Libraries here and it
is possible that if a user did not have any fonts, he might still
have use for the downloader. You can use it to download PostScript
language programs, select serial communications ports and modify
communications parameters, print a directory of fonts available on
your printer and restart your printer to clear its VM of unnecessary
fonts and other files.
I hope things are starting to clear up for you – of course feel
free to ask more questions.

I found the user's manuals for the two typefaces that I have. Futura and
Clearface. Thank you for the information about changing the registration.
I think my confusion lies in the workings of the program. When I go to the
PSFonts program the first thing the screen says is Initialization. A bunch of
dots follow and finally the program comes up. I tell the computer [Do] to
download a particular font which I have marked. It takes a very long time and
when it finally stops, I don't know what to do from there. When I go back to
WordPerfect and look at my list of fonts, the one I just downloaded do not
appear. Am I looking in the wrong place? I know that I have plenty of memory
and that they were downloaded.

I spoke with the technical support staff and they agree that you
need to get the updated WPRINT6.all file, dated 9/14/89, that includes
ITC Clearface. If your .all file is dated 9/14/89 then let me know
and we'll investigate from there.
