Let's say you're using Illustrator. One possible way might be to set the lines
you want, and go to the Paint menu. Give 'em a bold black stroke and a white
fill. This may or may not work, depending on the face you're using and the
thickness of the stroke. Your example, crude as it is, would present some
problems; a letterform with a radically differently-weighted serif (Bodoni?)
would lose the serif, given any thickness of stroke at all. An evenly-weighted
letter (Futura?) should work pretty well. I did this effect on an album cover I
designed recently: If you're inclined to chase it down, look for "NDUGU" in the
jazz section. LP title: Old Friends, New Friends. NDUGU is an Illus.doc. (in
Futura). Should this not sound like it'll fit your need, you might try some
lettering in one of the Drawing/PS Illustration programs, say, for instance
Adobe Illustrator. Can be done. Have done it myself. Good luck
