A2088 drive problem

About this BridgeBoard problem…
I have an A2088 Bridgeboard in an Amiga 2000.
The PC display keeps giving the following error message:
"Boot disk failure. Type key to retry."
What I've done:
1. Verified that BridgeBoard is properly seated.
2. Verified that heads on 5.25" drive are moving.
3. Tried a couple of different boot disks.
4. Tried a different cable from BridgeBoard to drive.
5. Tried Bridgeboard with and without IVS Trumpcard on Amiga side.
Any other suggestions? Or is the disk drive fried?
If so, can I use an off-the-shelf PC 5.25" internal drive to replace it?

Yes to an off the shelf 5.25" to replace the drive that came with the
A2088, although the faceplace may not be able to be swapped with the current
faceplate.
However, before you do that…one more thing to check. The FDC chip
(Floppy Disk Controller) may not be working properly and/or not properly
seated. It's the large DIP style chip in the top middle of the board. Try
pushing in on it and see if it's loose in the socket. If possible, try to get
your dealer to check it out by replacing it with a known good one. Likewise
with a known good drive.
No sense buying a new drive if the chip is bad, or vice versa.

I checked the FDC chip, and it is warm to the touch (even though all the
other chips aren't.) I think this may be the problem, then, and I will hie
myself to my dealer on Monday.
Meanwhile, however, I have this multifunction card for the PC side still
sitting in a box. This card claims to have an onboard FDC, and inspection shows
that, yes, it has an FDC chip and the correct connector & cable.
Do you suppose there's any way to (a) disable the BridgeBoard FDC and let
this expansion board take over, or (b) use the FDC chip from the expansion
board to replace the one on the Bridgeboard? (Both chips are soldered in place,
so in case of option (b) I know enough to let my dealer take care of it.)

Yes, the FDC chip will run hot…that's normal for it. I doubt the two
chips are the same (BB chip and one on multi-function card) but they might be.
I do know that other boards with built in floppy disk controllers when used
wiht the BB have fried the BB (in particular a COPY II PCBoard).

One other off the cuff suggestion, Don, is to try the OTHER Bridge slot. I've
heard that something called a "blaster chip" ? can cause some problems.. ? I
know my BB only worked properly in one of the two slots.
