Martin, if you don't want the system requester to show up you can temporarily null out the process->WindowPtr and restore it after you try the Lock().

Yeah, you don't get the system requester, but you also don't get the volume name if the boot volume is not online. Nope, the only way to do this the RIGHT way is to scan the device list.
