I'm wondering if there are any public domain collections of generic 3-D objects; specifically people and furnature. I'm a media lab instructor at Simon Fraser University in Canada and I plan to have our students use these objects to construct commercials as part of their course work. Theresa Guay PS: Thanks in advance.

Well, for 3D people, you are bringing "coals to Newcastle". I mean: you have that team working right at SFU doing all that great work on 3D modelling of walking figures. Seems you might be able to find a few "figures" floating around their computer room, n'est pas? The problem with "generic" 3D, of course, is that there is not really any such thing (except, of course, RenderMan: which isn't really "there" yet). You will need to specify the format to find a resource. There are a number of companies who specialize in renting or selling model files for certain machines. Tell me a bit more about your requirements and let's see what we can find. Ken Loss-Cutler

Thanks for your quick reply. By generic I ment the figures not the file format. IE: A generic female figure and a generic male figure that can be modified to show more specific facial and body characteristics. As for around the University, all (but us) animation is done with MAC's, NEXT's, and other expensive high-end stuff. Thus we can use their output. My requirements are far more modest that that, just so me stuff compatable with Turbo Silver or Sculp 4D. TTFN Theresa

If sculpt 4D can use either *.3d2 or autocad *.dxf files I can help ya out there. I've got cyber sculpt and can convert to DXF if need be. BTW using Sculpt 4D are ya using a Amiga 3000?any problems?

As I mentioned in another message, we've got conversion modules for InterChange that read both CAD-3D and DXF, and the DXF module also writes DXF files from any InterChange-supported 3D format. So you can freely go between Sculpt and DXF, DXF and VideoScape, Turbo Silver to DXF, etc.

How much is it?where can I get it? I'm probably gonna get a 3000 25 mhz in November So I may need it to use my library of Models on the 3000.I'm probably going to use Sculpt 4D Do you know of any incompatability problems with the 3000 and Sculpt 4 D? Thanx

Call Syndesis at (608) 455-1422 for more information. They'll send you some literature about the CAD-3D module, and our other modules, if you like.

THANX FOR THE INFO.I HAVE YET ANOTHER question now. I saw in the september issue of Amiga Format a 16,28,and 33 mhz acclerator card for the Amiga 2000.Is there any place in the US that sells them? I would rather get a 33 mhz A2000 which is established and has all the bugs worked out as well as being able to use the Video Toaster than to get the 3000 and have to worry about compatabity problems Thanx again

What do you mean? "Is there any place that sells them?" No, this company made a couple hundred boards, then buried them in a big hole. 🙂 Sure, a nice board is made by GVP and sold through many dealers, including mail order. Are you in the US? If not, I'm sure many of these dealers would be willing to send it to you anyway.

John, John, be nice <smmiiille>. But I almost fell off my chair I was laughing so hard. Thanks for the nice 'pick me up' this afternoon. Victor A. Wagner, Jr.

I'm talking about the one from GVP yea. I'm in the US,do ya know any place in the US that sell them and for approx How much the 28 mhz and the 33 mhz versions are? Also If I use a multisynch monitor with a A2000 will I still need to get a flicker fixer ? Thanx again
#1064From: SyndesisSep 30, 1990 9:39 PM
There are dozens of places that sell it. Your local dealer probably sells it. Just buy an Amiga magazine for dozens of leads. There's no need for a multisync unless you've got a Flickerfixer. on the A2000.

Hey, she didn't say "generic format", she said "generic objects", like desks, chairs, tires, cars, I presumed. You're right, though, there's lots of great 3D data out there, all we need is the right to use it. Unfortunately, most people have realized that making good – even "generic" – 3D objects takes lots of time and effort. Even the most gracious, supposedly public-serving universities don't hand out this sort of data. Leaving the conversion of formats to useful utilities like InterChange. Do you know anyone with one of those 3-space laser digitizers? You can whip up lots of data, fast.

Antic has a few for the Amiga but not PD there like $20 ea with a buncha models on each disk Also I can create some for ya too if interested just lemme know in what format like *.dxf or whatever

I know Antic has some 3D disks, Syndesis ported them from the CAD-3D format from the Atari ST, using our CAD-3D conversion module for InterChange. "Good" 3D objects are often a matter of taste and style. To a publisher, they want to be certain they've got original objects, not ones stolen from some other company's collection. To some 3D artists, they want ultimate detail and realism even if a single object or scene taxes their eight-meg machine to the limit. To other 3D artists, they want minimal polygons and just the "essence" of the shape of an object. These artists want to be able to remove the unseen backsides of objects, like the ghost towns in Westerns, in order to reduce the time it takes to render a single frame. Tell me about the way you create objects, and what kinds of things you build…

Hi Ho: None that I know of off hand, but Impulse I believe sells a diskfull of house hold items. other than that maybe with the new system configuration of Amiga Forums we could start one. Also check the venders forum. some people are tring to start a Turbo Silver user grupe online. Let me Know if you need any thing spacific… Brad Hayes

Thanks for your reply. I would be interested in joining a Turbo Siver group, so count me in. TTFN Theresa

Well, your very welcome. Now you wouldn't happen to know where I could find a FootBall Helmet Object. It could be in almost any format, I do have Interchange. I am not a great FootBall fan and am having great dificulty creating one from scratch… Brad Hayes
#955From: Peter GreciSep 29, 1990 1:03 AM
I'll try and create one for ya tonite if ya want
#1014From: BRAD HAYESSep 30, 1990 12:15 AM
Peter: Thanks for the offer. I did an OK job if you have any Ideas about how to clean up a hand made spher I would love to hear them. The helmet looks great in wire but I did a 15 frame rotation, solid modle of course. The moving helmet looks kind'a lumpy, like it's been beaten just a bit. If you were going to make one for your own collection this will be a good head start. Thanx Brad Hayes

Well I was just gonna do it as a way to practice
#1080From: BRAD HAYESOct 1, 1990 1:10 AM
I know I need as much practice as posable. the project I'm working on has turnded out to be very complex. And the guy wants it by thursday. If I were smart I would have told him NO WAY. but I took the job at next to free, just to show off. that's how I'v gotten most of my work. Just from doing things real cheap for some one. Then they ALWAYS show it to there freinds. I usually get at least one phone call from some one. Thanks for the offer Brad Hayes

Can ya use objects in the *.3d2 format of Cyber line from Antic?
