I've been drooling over your offerings in the DAK catalogs, but I'd
really like to buy a Sony CDU-541 rather than the Sony drive which you
currently bundle. Is there any chance that Dak can arrange with Sony to
offer the 541 as internal mount alternative to the drive when you currently
sell? I'm really interested in having a MPC-supported drive and I already
have a SCSI port on my ProAudio Spectrum, so the Sony CDU-541 looks like a
good bet. Now if I could only combine it with your GREAT software
bundles…

Sorry, there are currently no plans of DAK offering the CDU-541. We only
sell a relatively small number of different products — but in large
volume. Just the nature of our business. If your heart is set on the 541
you should be able to locate it through some other mail-order companies, or
even your local dealers.

Get the 541 and don't settle for anything less. After listening to all of
this talk I feel very fortunate. I went to my local hardware dealer and he
got on the phone for me and talked to all of his distributors and he said
"get the sony 541". I haven't regretted it one minute. The access time is
about the same but I think the big diff is the 64k buffer. This is what
will make multimedia work better, (along with the fastest access time).
I had the friend who made the calls install the thing for me mostly because
I wanted to support him for the time he invested helping me research the
thing. It has worked flawlessly and the video is great (on the mammals cd).
OTOH wait around for a few months and I'm certain something better will
come along.
If I can answer any more questions drop me a note. So far I have about ten
cds in my library.

I'm in the very same boat you're in, that is, I really would like to have
the current and future DAK bundles, but would like a higher performance
drive. I also read Dave's message to you, which included "Get the 541 and
don't settle for anything less" and "OTOH wait around for a few months and
I'm certain something better will come along". In light of all this, what
do you think of the following strategy ? Get the DAK package now. The
drive is cheap ($399), and, according to Bryan from DAK, you'll give
yourself rights to all future DAK bundles. Use the drive for a while, and
wait for the next big advance in performance/price in new drives. When
that comes, buy the new drive to use with all your current and future DAK
software.
Then what would you do with the DAK drive ? Other than selling it, I
wonder if you could attach and use the DAK drive (which is NOT SCSI)
simultaneously with the newer drive (say, keeping a dictionary disk in the
old DAK drive for use at all times, and swapping other disks in your other
drive, or even using the DAK drive to play music CD's while using the other
drive for other things).

That's a pretty good suggestion. Actually, I figure I can always sell
the drive for a couple of hundred bucks (it may well be worth that to me to
get the DAK bundles) or put it on my wife's PC (yeah, we're a "two-PC
family"). Thanks for the idea; I'll have to mull it over and make some
sort of decision. The other possibility, of course, is to buy a drive and
bundle from someone else. Tiger has great CD-ROM prices at purchase time
but I've heard a lot of horror stories from people who've had problems with
them. Wish the NEC drives which Tiger carries were a bit better for
multimedia.
