#CD-Rom pressers

I'd like all the info I can get on one-time CDRom pressers. They sound like
they're ideal bot as a service bureau for people who want a quick & dirty
test CDRom, also as an ongoing development tool to cut down time and costs.
My understanding of these machines is that they're essentially a worm drive
that writes in CDRom format. Is that right? Who sells them. What brand
names? Approx. Costs?

According to some quotes given in a seminar in April '91, a machine that
makes "one off" CD-ROMs (not WORM – you couldn't get a true proof copy from
different technology, if that is your intent) costs about $35,000. Some
CD-ROM mfgrs (all?) will make one for you for a price dependent on how fast
you want it. In April, Disc Manufacturing, Inc. (DMI) quoted a fee of $500
for 3 day turnaround, $1000 for one-day service, including Premastering &
Mastering. The machine is called "Laser Master." Sorry, I can't remember
who manufactures the machine, but if you called DMI they could tell you.

Another use for one-off CDs is as an archive tool for a small business that
has a lot of documents or other data to organize and maintain in a
tamper-proof, durable, space-saving medium.
The only difficulty with opening a service to deal exclusively with one-off
CDs is that you still need the premastering & mastering technology &
knowledge. That might not be economical without a full-blown manufacturing
plant.
