My machine is open now after installing 2.0. There was a letter or
article in a magazine once that outlined an interesting project I'm
going to try tommorow. If you remove your fan (2000) you can install
it again with longer screws on the back side of the machine (clearly
not everyones cup of tea), blowing in! You can also isolate the fan
from the screws with rubber washer (eyeglass rings might work) and it
was claimed to be silent. Then put a cloth over the back of the fan
and Viola! a filter. Not recommending this proceedure it may even be
stupid but my car works fine right now and I'd like to fix something.
The system was designed to blow the air out…on purpose.
Consider what's right next to the fan…one of the larger heat
generating pieces in the Amiga…the power supply. If you blow air in thru
the back, you heat the air…and then use that heated air to "cool" the
rest of the Amiga.
The power supply itself can withstand more heat that other
components and the rest of the Amiga doesn't heat up the air as much as the
power supply does… so you still get quite a bit of cooling across the
power supply.
This information was given to me by the guy who designed the A2000
so I accept it.

That's a clear explanation of what's going on. I don't think I'm
going to execute my plan. But since we live in an apartment and would like
to leave my machine on more my search for Amiga Stealth technologies

If I had some Scott fan filter media, I would probably give the fan
idea a shot! The amount of 'garbage' that gets drawn into my Amiga
2000/030 really does bother me. I keep a cartridge installed in my
SyQuest drive at all times, even if it is not spinning, just in hopes
that the presence of the cartridge will help to keep the dust and
lint away from the heads.
Actually, with an Amiga 3000, an A3070 tape drive, an Amiga 2000/030,
and external disk drive enclosure/power supply, and a laser printer,
all with fans, this place sounds about like an airport anyway! The
laser printer's fan is clearly the winner as far a noise goes.

No major problems, just enough to really annoy one. I have been
arguing with myself for close to a year about buying a new one. This
one is seven years old and the 64's were not all that 'hot' to start
with.
Well if you have to shop for a new car try and enjoy it. I
think I'll keep this one in good shape for a year or so. Also, Don
had some pretty good thought on the fan reversal project. After
reading them I've changed my mind.
I should have said something also. I have considered the modification but
had intended to use a larger capacity fan for the reasons given.
since you mentioned you had a laser printer, which one do you have. I am
looking to buy a laser printer for my amiga and am not sure which ones to
look at. If you could also let me know how yours has worked and if you
have had any problems with it. Thanks for the info.
Well my experience will not be of much use to you (that is the experience
with the present printer). I am using an old C-Ltd LazerXpress printer.
It is a SCSI bus connected Mac based printer using the Ricoh engine. The
printer software uses a thing called a 'virtual page' for the printing. A
virtual page is built in memory (nearly a meg depending upon the page size
and completely independent of whats on the page). The laser printer driver
then feeds the contents of the virtual page to the printer (the virtual
page contains an exact bit map for the printer).
Software that is designed to work with the virtual page really shines with
this printer (in particualr, PageStream and ExpressPaint). Printing of
very detailed page layout is quite fast. Most people doing DTP are quite
surpised when they see how fast this system prints.
The problem however is that C-Ltd is now a defunct company and the system
is no longer for sale.
I have used a couple of HP LaserJet printers and am satisfied as to their
quality and functionality. I am keeping funds available to buy an HP with
postscript cartridge just in case this current system fails. In my
opinion, you get the most 'bang for the buck' with the HP units. Some
people don't need that level of quality and reliability but I do.

Before you spend $1300 on an HPIIIP w/postscript cartridge, be sure to
check out the Texas Instruments MicroLaser PS/35… for about the same
money as the IIIP, you get a 6 page per minute printer with both parallel
and serial ports, a 250 sheet input tray (you can add another), 35 Adobe
postscript fonts, HP LJII emulation, face down or staight path face up
output, 17 seconds warmup time, built like a tank (with a Sharp Laser
engine).

Thanks for your input. I'll look in to it. I haven't done alot of
checking though the lowest price non mail order I have for a HPIIIP with 2
meg and post script is real close to 1600. Once again thanks.

Noticed you mention owning the A3070 tape drive. What do you think of the
unit? Do you know if it will work with the A2090A, or will I have to
upgrade to the 2091 controller (and get an omti adapter for my ST-506
drive)?
I saw what one mail order house wants for the drive in the Nov AmigaWorld.
My dealer is supposed to see what CBM Canada wants for the drive –
hopefully a reasonable price!

The A3070 is a pretty nice unit. It is fan cooled (very quiet, I can't
tell when it is not on). It's appearence matches the 3000 very well. It
has the 25 pin SCSI cable/connector and has the pass-through connecting
WITH THE 25 PIN EXTERNAL TERMINATOR. Thus, there is no opening the box to
remove or install termination pack to chain additional stuff — about time!
I don't think that it will work with the 2090A but you might want to look
at the docs with programs like bintap to see what may or may not work. I
don't have a 2090 in any of my machines anymore.
The bintape docs that I just looked at say that bintape will work with a
2090A if the disk drive is an ST-506. I suspect that you could not add a
SCSI drive to your controller if you wanted to have the tape unit.
Unfortunately, the docs do not indicate if the A3070 will work or not. I
strongly suspect that the A3070 will work but you must still use the C=
specified tape carts in the drive. Basically the A3070 looks for the proper
tape and will not work unless the 150 Meg carts are used.
I believe that there are probably cheaper solutions than C= A3070.
Thanks for the info on the A3070. I'll find out on friday what my dealer
can get one for up here – I hope! With CBM Canada, you never know what
their pricing will be like, so it is possible the A3070 could be comparable
in cost to getting an external tape drive from TTR in the states. I should
find out friday.
A suspect the problems with the 2090A are two fold – command passthru not
supported and removable media not supported. This may be a good time to
update from the 2090A to the 2091. Anybody know of good sources for OMTI
ST-506 / SCSI adapters (and the model number/price)?

Have you considered going to MR.Backup (TTR) or one of the other commercial
pgms that supports tape drives?
Yes, bintape is in the libraries here (as bintap.lzh I think). No, I don't
use it. I am currently using C= hdbackup program (which is awful).
I am considering a commercial tape backup program but the 'fur is still
flying' and I don't have much of a consenses as to which on to buy.
