Rock polishing

I would like to know if anyone can tell me what abrasives are used in those small rock tumblers (polishers). I have a small one and want to make a larger one, but the composition of the various abrasives is not written on the small packages. Any other suggestions on rpm, cooling etc. would be appreciated. Hello Doug, I have been lurking in this forum for a few months and find it very interesting. It rekindled my childhood interest in rock/mineral collecting and that is why my wife bought me a rock tumbler. Of course now that I am an adult I MUST have bigger toys, and of course I MUST design it myself! <g> Alex

Alex… Silicon carbide in screened grits is the most common "grinding" compound…I most often used three: a combination 60/90 for initial grinding; 220 for a secondary grinding; and 500/600 for "prepolish". There are a great many polishing approaches depending on what you're tumbling. I've tumbled agate and jasper for the most part. Cerium oxide together with some liwuid dish soap is a typical polishing substance, most often used in conjunction with plastic spheres or other types of "buffering" objects (walnut shells). All these compounds are available at lapidary supply stores. There are a number of books about tumbling which go into some detail about tumbling speeds and types of rock which can be mixed in the tumbler (they must all be of nearly the same hardness). One that I particularly liked is buried in the garage at the moment and the title escapes me; I just saw it listed in LJ or Rock & Gem but for the life of me I can't find the listing right now. If you ask at a lapidary supply store I think it has a white cover with a variety of tumbled stones depicted. Typically, cooling isn't an issue with tumbling because the movement inside isn't fast enough to generate much frictional heat. There are nearly as many tumblers as there are backyard engineers. Everything from old automobile tires set on turning rollers to cement mixers have been successfully used. Be aware that the tumbling process does produce gases that can build up pressure and in large (commercial) operations have been know to burst the tumbling barrel. -Russ PS What I ended up with was a "system" of three tumblers. A 10# unit for rough grind. A 6# unit for medium; and a 3# unit for polish…I found that I was sorting a 10# batch and getting about a full 6# "load" that I wanted to advance for the next phase. Then I'd refill the 10# barrel with the remaining stones from the old batch plus new rocks to fill it back up…When the 6# batch was done it usually yielded about one 3# load for polish. Eventually, I had all three going most all the time.

Hi Russ.. Have you had a chance to compare the surfaces of polished stones compared to natural gravel found in deposits other than streams and beaches? I have done quite a bit of comparison and found some amazing differences in the surfaces and was wondering if anyone else has. Kamron

Kamron… I'm not sure I understand where you're headed with your question… There are certainly considerable differences among polished stone surfaces; and I tend to "study" the surface of rocks anywhere I go (g). Be it the beach, stream beds, alluvial fans, chapparal (gravity tumbled surfaces?). There are surfaces that "face" naturally because a stone fractures on crystal planes or fractures concoidally (agate, jasper, opal). Jade takes a moderately nice "natural" polish because it is both hard and "tough" (intertwined molecular structure as opposed to crystaline). What kind of differences are you refering to? -Russ

Thanks for the response >> What kind of differences are you referring to? << First let me define "virgin Gravel"…a rounded shape stone that has not been tumbled or abraded in a stream or river. I have a theory that this virgin gravel which covers the earth in deep beds was created by the earth expelling molten materials into the air where they cooled into globular shapes. I have studied the surfaces of virgin gravels found that the surfaces have features that IMHO could not be formed by friction and grinding….let me explain… Using tumbled polished stones as a baseline on what the surface of a ground gravel looks like i have found that While the surface features vary depending on the density of the stone and the polishing sequence they all have something in common … a curved surface plane that appears smooth. When examined closely under 10x to 40x power the surface plane is seen to include pits, scratches and rounded projections but all the features are in the curved plane. Virgin gravel on the other hand has an extremely complex surface. There is no curved plane or with none of the scratches and gouges that are found on polished stone. Instead there are glossy mirrored finishes, perfect crystalline forms, cavities with feathery crystal growths and surface textures which to me appear to be that of a cooling molten surface that shrinks into an orange peal type structure. In short completely different than the stone polished or beach type gravels. I was wondering if you have had occasion to examine virgin gravel…and if no would you? Compare the surfaces of polished stones to the virgin gravel. They are completely different. Kamron

No I haven't studied gravels in the way you describe…they do sound quite spectacular but I must confess my plate is running over with opal-related interests and metalsmithing (which has somehow meandered to a back burner itself). -Russ

Oh I know about plates… If you get the chance collect some of this virgin gravel and compare it to tumbled gravel and get back to me… Note that a couple of peeks at the surface of virgin gravel could change how you think about the earth. Kamron
